Fev footage from the 1970s

Recommended Posts

Anyone over a certain age will know that the Fev team from the mid 1970s was almost certainly the greatest in the club's history, but that there is very little footage around from that era other than the 1973 and 1974 Challenge Cup Finals.

In the last couple of weeks though someone has put up footage on YouTube from the 1976 and 1977 Yorkshire Cup Finals v Leeds and Cas respectively. Maybe this has been around for ages, but I haven't seen it before.

It has to be said that we lost both games and so it's far from vintage footage of what the mid-1970s teams could do, but it does give a rare glimpse of players like Vince Farrar, Charlie Stone, Keith Bridges, Pete Smith (with long flowing hair!), John Newlove, Steve Quinn and many other Rovers greats.

If you weren't around in the 70s don't judge them on these performances because we weren't anywhere near our best either time, but it's still a rare opportunity to see some of the Rovers legends (several of whom are now deceased sadly) in action.

Started watching Fev in 72 and of all the home matches I watched in the 70s; the Leeds Cup match at home was the best I have seen. Think it was 33. 3. I watch You tube regularly so if anyone can upload it somehow if possible it would be great.?

33-7. Hardly any games in those days seemed to be filmed other than TV games (or if they were, the footage never surfaced) so I doubt very much there's any footage lurking of that game, which was my favourite too.

I would be great if the club could put some of their archives on their YouTube channel.

There's about 20 games in the "Gold" section of RoversTV, and commercial reasons probably dictate why they don't want to just give that sort of stuff away for free on YouTube. I might be wrong but I doubt there's much pre-1980s footage kicking around at all.

Saw most of all our games in those days. It was interesting to see how quick a player was released after being tackled. The games were fast and inventive. I think on balance after seeing some against the head I would like to see proper scrums again even if they were a bit messy in the matches shown. Some great memories of the players on view. My favourite was John Newlove. Vastly underrated player.

Thought his son Paul was the best centre I have ever seen.

Certainly up there with the best. I used to see John walking in Brockadale as an escort and guide to ramblers. Great bloke.
