What do you want the international game to look like?

Recommended Posts

In a dream, the way some people here seem to think it should immediately be (eg. like rugby union). In reality, I'd take like it was in the early 90s but incorporating more nations. That means an organised cyclical calendar that gives every game context and meaning, home (and away) test matches for each of the big 3 each year, and regular games for the next tier - against each other, as well as the big 3. A 9s world cup should be part of this calendar too. This is all realistic and totally achievable with just a little cooperation and planning.

Who has said it should immediately be like Rugby Union? Regular matches for countries, with both in season and end of season matches, and an organised calendar really shouldn't be asking for too much. That is all most are asking for.

when i say "like union" it is a case of exactly what you then go on to say.

The world league idea was simply formulating what is already happening with a 6 nations and rugby championship comprising the games against your hemisphere and the summer tours and autumn internationals comprising the games against the other hemisphere. With a final at the end and relegation, which was the sticking point.  then there were competitions at every level below that with promotion and relegation leading into this "top tier".

The issue was the drop from top tier to tier 2 for the clubs relegated which is understandable. Equally it would be an issue for RL to an extent but we wouldnt be looking at a major playing nation dropping down a tier as you could from the 6 nations.

our top tier could easily be:

England, Wales, France, A.N. other

Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, A.N. Other

Tier 2

Scotland, Ireland, Serbia, Lebanon

USA, Canada, Jamaica,

Samoa, PNG, Fiji, Cooks

Have to play everyone in your tier at least once in a certain period, relegation and promotion etc... The big teams are safe realistically, the smaller teams may not see the drop off, if relegated, as so big as without this system that is where they would be anyway.. it brings meaningful internationals for everyone, it has smaller teams facing bigger teams so getting them exposure.

there was talk of £5bn of funding on the table for Union to move to this sort of thing from an outside investment company. if they gave us a 1% of that it would be a very nice boost!! (wishful thinking i know)
