Is it just me, or should we expect that players who have reached the second tier of our game, one level below the elite club level in our country, should already have the basics?

To me, a coach should work on moves and systems (offensive and defensive) and turning individuals into a team using their collective strengths.

I believe the one thing KH sorted out was an effective defence. I think Paul Handforth sorted out the attack.

just remember Harrison took half of the GT side from 2008/2009 and made them into to a top 3 winning trophy side but it wasn’t good enough for some.. JK same 2013-2016 best years of watching batley despite a blip 2 months from the grand final which included two defeats to Workington and Doncaster at home

we’ve signed two players who know the division in Morton & Walshaw yes he’s been around the clubs but he’s played championship for a few years..

we might not make the top 5 but we will finish higher than 2019 and don’t forget Widnes,Bradford are not full time...

Players have to be taught basics? If professional players don’t know the basics especially at championship level we are f***ed?

Some minor "basics" can be corrected by coaches, often when the players themselves don't know that they re gettig them wrong. Simple but fundamental things like feet and hip postions when defending and correct tackling techniques can make the small differences that can turn losses into victories.

We all carry on learning, even those of us who think we know it all.  ? ?

Sport, amongst other things, is a dream-world offering escape from harsh reality and the disturbing prospect of change.

Some might suggest that to have a solid grounding in the basics is the best platform from which to learn.

As it been discussed certain aspects in defence & attack basics  need to be shown

Leeds under Tony smith at one point went back to it been stripped down and learnt everything again it works sometimes but I doubt championship players have 6 hours a day to train... clubs are lucky to have 7-8 hours a week to train!

big difference is the game is changing every day now with more teams going full time etc

I agree with you regarding our position of being "F****d", but (showing my age here) in my day, we all knew how to tackle, pass in both directions, back up, kick a ball, it didn't matter what position you played, everyone had these basic skills and could be relied upon to fit in, if necessary. One of the first skills you learned was how to kick.

How many players nowadays, have these basics like being able to kick, even at SL level? There are a lot of top flight halfbacks that can only pass in one direction and even less are particularly good defenders. How often did Dewsbury fail to score from a good break/half break due to nobody backing up? We missed loads last season.

Watching us and quite a few other teams last season, there are very few players capable of timing a run on to the ball, never mind timing a pass after drawing a defender. Invariably teams are stood as flat in attack, as they are in defense and taking the ball stood still. I honestly think the basics is where we fall down against the Aussies.

One of the biggest reasons St Helens walked the league last year IMO, was due to the fact that every player in the team runs from deep and hits the ball on the burst  Most of the tries they have scored this season, have not been down to anything other than basic rugby, played accurately at pace.

If Linners can just instill the basics and stop us from making so many unforced errors, we will be in a much better position than last year.

One of my main moans is the skill of the passer from the tackle at the play the ball. I am not one of those who whinges about the past being better than the game currently, but i genuinely think that the passing from the ptb has declined in quality with the loss of the specialist hooking role. One of the skills of the hooker was in passing accurately from the tackle. This helped the oncoming forward's momentum. Nowadays, it seems to be anyone's job.

Anyway, I also think that the timing of a run is not a basic but coaching (Paul Geary?)

My main hope is that we see an increase in competitiveness next season.

I'm sure that you will - the relegation battle will be fascinating next year.

The Hoover's pass from PTB relies on there being a big mobile forward coming in to the ball. Having lost Rowey, there's only 1 guy we can rely on to be running on, that's Wardy. The rest of the big lumps barely walked onto a ball last season and that needs to alter.

Of course they have to be taught basics. Think of it more as improving players rather than lining them up and getting to hold their hands in a W like you used to with the toddlers to teach catching. Players don't wake up at age 17 or 18 and boom, no need to practice or improve on the basics.

Watch any professional side train and there'll be both specific 'basics' drills and drills that incorporate basics as a major part.

Walker assuming he can stay fit and Wardy of course. My wonder is, we have only 21 men at the moment, heavier on backs,  are we still looking for inbounds or DR/loans? I keep banging on aboutbthe, but since first Hirst then Rowe left we have lost our trademark domination up front, Dickinson and Everett aren't the ram raid, busting replacements.

Interesting to see how White fits in and plays. Keeping Walker is a good move and I think the new coaching set-up will also bring a new direction to an established team. I again don't expect to finish in the top 5 but I do want to see us compete and push the better teams more than we did this season

The mandatory mauling of our noisy neighbour's is a forgone conclusion so I wont add that to my expectations.

If we finish one place above last seasons effort I would see it as being successful. All I want in a match is for us to be competitive,  and if we lose we gave it our best shot. We all know last season was dire most of the time, but there were games that we showed what we can really do on a rugby pitch. A bit more  consistency this coming season and I will be a happy chappy.  I'm hoping  we can get a few early results to entice the stay aways to come through the turnstiles again.  Glad ward stayed.

Perhaps it would help the club if there was a few more BISSA members, Featherstone within a few months last i heard were on 250 members probably 4 times what we have. A number of supporters last season said they would not contribute while Diskin was in charge but they did not contribute before he became the coach & as far as I know there has not been a rush to join since he has left. Your money your choice but surely £5 a month is not a lot to ask. (This is my opinion not a BISSA message)

Maybe so ernieone but they are 4 times more successful than Batley, so people would flock to them.

On the whole I'm happy with how Batley operate, just need a bit more success on the field.

Given how York, Featherstone are recruiting it looks like we will do well to get better than last season.

Featherstone have got their 2020 playing home shirt, season tickets out already building on the success from their grand final feel good success, York have their 2020 season tickets out and videos of their new ground out plus announcing sponsors for the upcoming season

It just doesn’t come on field for me
