England Youth squad announced for French Tests

The England selectors have named a 22-strong squad for this month’s Youth (under 16) internationals against France.

England will play two Test Matches against the French – at the KCOM Craven Park Stadium in Hull on Wednesday 17 July (kick off 7pm) and at Wakefield’s Mobile Rocket Stadium on Saturday 20 July (KO 2pm). Both games will be shown live on the RFL’s Our League app.

Castleford Tigers, City of Hull, St Helens, Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors each supply three players, with the remainder coming from Huddersfield Giants, Leeds Rhinos, London Broncos, Newcastle Thunder and Wakefield Trinity.    

England Youth team offers a well-established pathway to the elite level, via the England Academy system. Both are incorporated within the RFL’s England Performance Unit (EPU) which aims to develop more world-class England players for all senior squads by 2021.

Head coach Danny Wilson is supported by, among others, the former Great Britain international and Man of Steel Paul Sculthorpe, whose role as England Pathways Coach focuses on the development of country’s outstanding young players.

I see from the French Rugby League's official website that their players appear to come from eight clubs.  At a quick glance, I think Limoux has the greatest representation with five.

Well done Newcastle Thunder. Not only do the League One club run an academy, something some Super League clubs don’t do, players from the academy are been selected for England, outstanding work. We need to direct more funding towards this.

It’s testament to not only our academy but to all of the local community clubs and volunteers in our area

we firmly believe the reason for our success is because the model we have is different to other areas, we run an Australian style system where us as the pro club administrate and run the community game. everything we do feeds into Newcastle Thunder

Our goal has been to increase our player pool so that we have a thriving community game with a big player pool that will sustain the club for years to come.

for example our community game participation has grown nearly 40% in the last 4 years with over 1,300 players. And where we used to select 20 u15/16 academy players from a pool of only 60/70  kids we are now selecting from a bigger pool of 100/110 kids

3 new community clubs entered our structure this year and we hope to add another club next year that will take us to 15 local community clubs and our aim is to have over 1,500 local players by the time the 2021 World Cup comes.

Our view is “look after the community game and it looks after the rest”

Very good. In essence you think you can do a better job than RFL . 

It does help when you don’t have competitors locally for RL talent. That model is harder for some SL clubs to do with rivals often on their doorstep. But I do think there is a realisation that this is a better model to follow and one I’ve long pushed for - the Foundations are certainly heading in that direction and the likes of Leeds and Warrington have made great progress with this.

No we don’t think we can do a better job than the RFL, we have a fantastic relationship with the RFL. But what we would say is everyone looks to the governing body for all the answers to grow the game, when in fact it’s ever pro clubs equal responsibility to grow the game.

We are very proud of what we have achieved in the north east in the last 5 years and we are excited for the next 5 years

My club have three players in the starting line up for France tonight, the centre Thibault Marty(first year cadet) hooker Vincent calvayrac (2nd year) who played for my under 19s in the semi and final of the play offs and second row Arthur salles (first year) who played in the second test last year, the scrum half rougé from limoux is a very good player too,

Of course they have competitors for local talent, they could play Rugby Union, Football, any other sport going or not play any sport at all.

I think that would be really difficult to find unless someone knows where they are listed.  I was looking for information on Wigan's Alex Sutton following a previous post saying he was one to watch and the Wigan website doesn't details like date of birth so I wouldn't know where to look for that.

That’s a different type of competition, which all clubs have to deal with. 

My point was that the Thunder’s model is more difficult and complicated for the heartland clubs to replicate, as you could get one club doing all the hard work and other neighbours picking off the talent without doing any legwork.
