So where are the next generation of Australian half backs and who do we think they are? As I said earlier, Maloney, Pearce and Cherry Evan's are an average age of 31 while Corey Norman has just made his Origin debut at 28. None of these are the future.

Munster is quality and can play half or full back while I still think Cleary is a quality player although he has not quite kicked into the absolutely top class player he can be yet.

I rate Luke Keary very highly so its not as if the cupboard is bare but I don't think the half back depth is anywhere close to what it used to be in Australia.

I agree with you on this re depth.

Still a frightening number of game  changers knocking around 1,6,7,9 that can move positions and still be a huge threat.

Apologies for veering off OP but a side containing Mitchell, Tedesco, Munster, Ponga alone is a real headache to nullify.

What a wonderful game and a great effort to make it so by the Maroons to take the game to the last few minutes given that  devastating 2H NSW spell.

It does feel that between 2017 and 2020 we have well and truly missed our chance to smash the Aussies up! What a great international calendar we have. Remember how many times we played them between 2001 and 2006?

The Warriors and the Titans cop terrible decisions week after week. Maybe because they don`t have somebody like Cameron Smith who`s on the refs` backs all the time.

Off topic but when I reffed if someone was constantly in my face I made it very clear that they wouldn’t get any 50/50 calls going their way

I think that’s were Smith is very clever he talks to the ref respectfully. Getting his point across the right way not screaming and shouting in his face like Chris Hill or James Graham.

Maybe from one of these who are playing in the NRL this year:-

Mitchell Moses 24

Jake Clifford 21

Brodie Croft 21

Kyle Flanaghan 20

Sean O Sullivan 20

Tom Dearden 18

Jaeman Salmon 20

Maybe. We know that the NRL production line is always going to produce a lot of talent.

I would say that Cleary at 21 is ahead of all of these at the moment and as I say he hasn't quite kicked on to be the player he could be yet... it is still early days for him.

I guess my point is that SOO had 3 half backs in their 30's and one debutant at 28. Cleary was injured of course for game 3 but he was under a lot of pressure. Keary and Munster are the best at the moment and Munster is more of a running threat.... from a half back perspective I don't see the next Langer, Johns, Cronk or Thurston emerging from the pack yet.

Anyone would think they are running scared and doing their best to avoid playing us....

Yes totally agree, never loses his composure.

I remember Mitchell Pearce in game 2 politely giving it ‘Excuse me sir, sir...sir’ etc etc.

Bit hard for Cleary to make a tackle,he was sat in the stands.

haha, I edited that and added Cleary after I'd put it after Maloney! Technically still correct though..?.

I agree with a fair amount of that but Ferguson is definitely not world class. T-Turbo is a much better player than him

Ferguson has Represented Australia seven times.

What do you define as "World Class"

Years Team Pld T G FG P
2010–19 Indigenous All Stars 3 1 0 0 4
2010–16 Prime Minister's XIII 3 4 0 0 16
2012 Country NSW 1 2 0 0 8
2013–19 New South Wales 10 0 0 0 0
2016–17 Australia 7 6 0 0 24

Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

Munster will be/is a special talent that will be able to play anywhere in the backline.

His type of drive and determination and skill win games IMO.

Ponga could be anything.

I agree on both these. But both are more of an individual threat, you are not going to see Munster or Ponga guide a team around the park.  That is what I mean when i say the next, Johns, Cronk or Thurston.

Someone you’d consider for a World 17

You don't have to be in the top 17 in the World to be World class do you?

Dos that mean England only have 2 or 3 World class players?

I dislike the term "World class" it has nothing to measure it.

But if I had to say what my meaning would be it would be something like this.

A player capable of playing for some of the Best Club teams in the World and be able to hold his own against all opponents at Club and when selected at Representative level.

Not necessarily the top 17 but I would suggest that world class would mean a player is exceptional even at international level and among the very best two or three players in their position in the world... so maybe 30 or 40 players could be described at 'world class'.

Which team?

He hasn't done it for Queensland yet and if you mean Melbourne then a certain Mr Smith probably had a hand in somewhere.

I said be considered for the top 17, not has to be in it. So like Dunbar said that would be 30-40 players tops

As good as he is Smith does not set up the attack all on his own for the Storm.

Munster has had plenty of influence with the Qld team and the style of game they play.

He was last years Dally M Five-Eighth of the Year, that was not just for his running game IMO, his passing, kicks behind the line and setting up his outside backs were all part of his skill set that won him the award.

This is a similar skill set that George Williams has at Wigan (and soon to be Canberra) but I still wouldn't say that he was a half back who controlled the tempo and tactical aspect of the game and I think Munster is similar.

(I am not comparing Munster and Williams in quality, that is a different discussion).

Amazing really isn't it. We have 3 top tier nations and we can't organise a game against one of them for 36 months. Won't have played on British soil for 4 years.

That Qld try was a double movement all day long. My one complaint about the Aussie game is how they ignore rules or interpret them differently on a whim and sometimes chamge intereptation from one week to the next

A wonderful game of rugby league. The final try was made in Hollywood. You could not ask for anything more, with the long run by Ferguson breaking the tackle and just managing to keep inside the touchline, followed by the inside pass to the evasive run and score by James Tedesco.

The two tries by James Tedesco and the try by Damien Cook were brilliant
