Tommo

Batley Bob

Recommended Posts

I remember him turning up at Birstall Sports and Social Club which David Ward ran for his uncle a lifetime Batley fan Ken Whiteley along with Gwen his wife, We had just been on a trip down to Wembley to watch the G.B. v Australia game and when we arrived back at the club there was Glenn Tomlinson with a mate from Aus. asking Wardy for a trial at Batley.Wardy told him to come up and he would have a look, the rest is history. Also performed brilliantly for Bradford during his time there but was,I believe, let go to accommodate Shaun Edwards, big mistake in my book.

Tommo actually came by chance after Darryl van de Velde who was Castleford coach at time asked tommo to fly to England and try out at cas but they’d just signed mike ford from Oldham and he came to batley the rest is history 2002 him and dean lawford were unstoppable at times and shame he didn’t bow out with a grand final appearance after the season we had... a certain centre of Leigh’s injured our only prop that day

Went up to an "A" team saturday match, was told we've got a young kid from Oz playing 7, has turned up and asked for a game.  Played a blinder, was on bench for first team the following day (2 subs in those days), came on at half time I think it was and ran the show, telling the experienced players what to do, positions to take up etc.  Never looked back. What we would do for a miracle to happen again!

that's exactly right. he came over with a certain mick Cameron.

he was a hard as nails loose forward in the Bob Lindner mould, who was an absolute tackling machine.

to be honest Mick was just as influential that 1st season.

Incorrect. Tommo arrived at Batley with a guy called Mike Krause; who played a few games but quickly departed. Mick Cameron arrived the season after.

And just look at that crowd in the shot.

that probably was the entire crowd in that shot.

all huddled together on the open long stand for warmth........

halcyon days indeed.... I loved every minute of it!

Yes I know I was there and also going into the Taveners to thaw out or that was my excuse, and even before then going through the turnstyles at the top end of the cricket ground and walking across the field careful not to tread on the square.
