Post 2021,Where will Non Super League clubs be at

Recommended Posts

Well as we all know time moves very quickly and in a little over 2 years time the 2021 Championship and Championship 1 season will end, possibly with some clubs at the very least, maybe more who will probably have played their last ever game at least professionally/semi professional of rugby league or even their very last game full stop, because as we all know the TV Deal will be up for renewal and it looks like the money for Super League will be cut which will mean that the Championship and Championship 1 clubs will more than likely end up with at best very little or more likely nothing from central funding.

So I ask what are club chairmen doing right now to deal with this scenario? Are some clubs thinking the unthinkable and talking about mergers? Are some clubs going to change or amend their names ie say my team Swinton Lions adding Manchester into the official title ie Manchester Swinton Lions in order to try and gain a new audience and new sponsors etc?

Or will clubs that are being proposed like Ottawa and New York who by all accounts have big money sponsors who may look at a new possible Inter City Inter Continental club competition, with new governing body where clubs will on the back of it be able to get new and possibly(who knows)better sponsorship than what is currently available?

Now as I said earlier 2021 will come round very quickly and there is not much time left to do something and I think it is high time that certainly at the end of this season club chairmen along with the fans start talking and consulting so we know where we are at.And whatever happens the clubs MUST be as transparent as possible open and honest with the fans because if big calls have to be made,Whatever they are they will need fans on side. And of course what might be right for one club will not be right for another. And the game cannot afford to act in the same manner as HM Government or more to the point the current weak, pathetic, corrupt lying Prime Minister Theresa May has done with Brexit. They have to start the ball rolling now and collectively with everyone find answers and solutions before it is too late.

Crunch time is coming. We cannot Sit and wait. And more importantly we cannot do nothing otherwise most of these clubs will die.

why cant we sell the sport to lots of tv channels like football does.we need to employ people at the top who can get us a good deal.ive got a horrible feeling rimmer/elstone will just go to sky and get ripped off and sign some long term deal for peanuts.

It's really not that simple. Rugby League has a lot of value which it can unlock but it doesn't have a lot of interested parties.

But I'll tell you who did do a great bit of negotiating - Nigel Wood when he tied Sky up for such a long period at such a good rate in the last TV deal. Nobody seems to criticise that deal any more - Sadler, Lenaghan etc have piped down on that one for a fair while now.

I think the OP makes a very good point.

You would have to guess that half the clubs in the Championship and most if not all League 1 clubs rely on central funding for around 50% of their income.

When you factor in fixed costs such as travel, medical cover, coaching costs, stadium costs, insurance etc etc at many clubs there would be little or nothing left for player wages.

The situation may even be exacerbated in that if the RFL have no significant income clubs may even possibly have to pay to play in the comp as they do in France.

Thing is not all the TV money is for super league...I'm all for SL keeping every penny of a SL TV contract, crack on.....but they don't own challenge cup, international and lower league TV rights, sky actually paid for the rights to show x amount of championship & league one games...yes it might be pittance compared to a SL deal..but it's something....something to rebuild with..

Exactly. When the last TV deal was agreed someone put a value on the Championship rights and Sky will be well aware of that if they offer a SL only deal this time.

The championship is high value with P&R (more so if it was two up two down) but worthless if the drawbridge goes up

Championship will all be part-time. Those that can go full time will be in a enlarged SL, with no P&R.    Especially once the personal equity people invest and are able to influence fully.

Is that simply a guess, or do you have a source for that?

The problem is that the detail is lacking in the public domain.

Tbh, it looks like the amounts that we see published are the agreed distribution splits as opposed to what Sky paid for each part.

For example - there was a decent value for Internationals, despite Sky showing none and the BBC showing them all. There was also value for League 1, despite the RFL confirming that Sky don't own these rights.

The RFL were smart in negotiating decent splits across the game, something that it looks like the SL clubs will want to closely manage to retain as much of the pie.

We know there is little value in Champ RL as Sky don't bother showing it and the RFL show it free. Any Cup and Internationals income on top of costs etc wouldn't give great income to lower leagues tbh as SL clubs are huge stakeholders in those two areas too.

There are two areas that lower league clubs ate going to get income - make themselves attractive to SLE so that they will invest some of their money, but I see that come with almost feeder club status. Or alternatively get a strkng TV deal themselves for the comp, something that hasn't been forthcoming for years.

It will be interesting to see, and it does at least look like the lower division clubs have their eyes open at least.

What's your definition of high value? Sky barely show any games, bar what Toronto have arranged, so it can't be that high value.

Okay.

So what does "high value" equate to in terms of TV rights?

Million a year? More? Less?

Indeed.

Making bold statements confidently will not be helpful in a tv negotiation.

History has shown that these rights te d to be given away free.
