No TV for the Dracs?

Recommended Posts

An insistent rumor from very knowledgeable people in France tells that the Dragons' matches would no longer be televised by Bein Sport France. Have you heard anything about this?

'As we explained to you several weeks ago, L'Indépendant confirmed that the Catalan Dragons will no longer be broadcast in 2020 on beIN SPORTS.

End of a story started in 2012 between the Qatari channel and the Catalan Dragons. beIN SPORTS only paid 70,000 euros to the Super League in addition to the production cost of Dragons home games but Rob Elstone wanted to increase the price. The channel quickly explained that it would not follow the demands of the Super League and that it preferred to withdraw.

The NRL will continue on beIN but more Catalan Dragons and more other Super League matches. The Catalan franchise will have to find a new diffuser.'

Let's hope replacement coverage can be confirmed and some sort of deal arranged which is paid for by a tv company

So, SL with one French team and a bunch of northern English teams is evidently only worth 70,000 € a year to a French broadcaster.  I wonder if SL with two French teams and a bunch of northern English teams would be worth much more?

Well you get 28 home games and 2 big derbies as opposed to 14 home games and no derbies. Plus you broaden the geography, so yes probably.

To be honest, it's the covering of production costs for 28 games that's the really valuable input. That cost runs into the millions for full TV quality coverage. (ie. not just 2 camera Internet quality that we have recently started to have)

It would let Sky have an extra game every Saturday for next to nothing, which indirectly enhances the value of the domestic contract. But Catalans and Superleague need to get an alternative fast, because if additional French TV games aren't provided, then Catalans participation starts to come into question.

Are you not normally honest?

So now we are €70,000 worse off and Sky have just lost 14 Super League games which they were able to show without any broadcast costs, as they were covered by Bein Sports.

If another broadcaster steps in and takes on coverage of Catalans that’s fine, if they don’t it’s a terrible move from Robert Elstone.

It does suggest that Rob Elstone is a very stupid  man.
