Villeneuve leopards

Recommended Posts

Getting the indication that of all the French clubs claiming to want to join the English league system they are the most serious and look to have the most intent with the way they go about their business.

Julien Rinaldi came in as coach and the team improved a great deal on the pitch, let's hope that the next coach continues the improvement and gets them challenging for trophies.

They've lost Jayson Goffin but have already made some decent signings for next season.

I genuinely think if they have the right management in place, play at Agen and market themselves across Aquitaine they can do really well.

Has the area got the population ?

Lot-et-Garonne is over 400,000. Villeneuve itself is tiny

So the RL team in Villeneuve since 1934 up-sticks and relocate to a union stronghold?

That's the only way it can work

It's a bit of a gamble to move to a small town with no historical interest and hope it works. Bordeaux would make more sense (but I don't think it does). They don't seem like a candidate for Super League, unlike Avignon for example.

They could rebrand as Aquitaine (which I've seen on their badge "Leopards of Aquitaine" before), but not move at present.

Could move the odd game to a big location occasionally, but it would defeat the point of the club doing that. They might as well just start a new club.

My money would be on it's a way it couldn't work.  You do know that the population of Agen numbers only 35k, with Villeneuve's being 24k. What's to gain?

Er that isn't it working.

So sad that they consider that a viable strategy. Did they have Mo Lindsey as a consusltant?

Villeneuve currently play in front of around 80 paying supporters at home,

yes, the town isn't even supporting the RL team they have now. Doesn't deserve a spot in te English system let alone Elite 1 in France. Time for the FFR13 to grow some balls and promote the sport in bigger cities that once had a strong RL presence like Bordeaux, Marseille, Lyon...and stop this small village stranglehold on the French game.

Agreed, relocating them sounds like a great idea to kill both the professional and amateur arms.

It would be great if the RFL did that too.

What were they getting during their most recent successful years in the late 90s/early 00s?

You could say the same about the RFL.

I've been to a game there with 2000+ people watching. There are a bunch of nearby smaller places that have (or did until recently) RL teams - Tonneins,Trentels, Marmande, Clairac etc. But it's hard to see why they'd be ahead of Avignon or Aude if we're talking teams from existing French RL areas to enter the English system.

The area North of there (Dordogne/Perigord) has the reputation of being full of British people, but probably not too many RL fans among them.

I think Avignon should be the next option to join the league system but to me it doesn't seem as though they're serious.

It would be great if we could get to a stage where Super League and the Championship were fully professional and a mixture of UK, French and Canadian teams.

Below this we could have a semi professional League One just for UK teams. A semi professional Elite 1/2 just for French teams. And a amateur Canadian league.

If we had a further 4 French clubs and a Canadian club join this could be possible.

The french clubs should stick to french competition and start to sell their competition in a better way.

I would like to know the budget of all the Elite 1 teams + their respective fan base…

this is already the case: independant french competition. why should they come "below" the English system.

Well if the best 6 French clubs were playing in either Super League or the Chance the Elite leagues would be a standard below this

We need to form a European pyramid.

European Super League is the top tier, then European Championship, European League 1 then below that NCL, Elite 1, Whatever the Irish competition is etc. End of season playoffs between the top L1/E1/Irish comp/Balkan Super League sides that want promotion for promotion into League 1.

If France ever strengthens to the point that they make up a lot of League 1, just move Elite 1 up a tier to have playoffs with League 1 for promotion into the Champ.

To begin with it should stop at a European Super League and European Championship. Perhaps League One and Elite One clubs could have a play off to enter the Championship but those leagues are too low down to be international IMO.
