Denton Rovers RLFC
On his day an absolute beast and had all the physical attributes to be a monster of the game, sadly atop that specimen was an absolute turnip of a brain at times! I just hope he finds a job, has a nice stable family network and doesn't get into trouble, happy retirment Gareth.
Damien
He could have been an absolute world beater but unfortunately wasted his talent.
Oliver Clothesoff
Could have been on a similar level to someone like Peacock at one point had he maintained his level of performance and hadn’t got caught with cocaine in his system or had brain explosions on field. A player without the skills, dedication, motivation and mindset to be a real top quality player Hock hasnt really been a top player for the past 6 years. Since he was 29. Jamie peacock was 28 when he joined leeds I'm so happy for you and Damien that you're perfect citizens with your internationally recognised achievements in your field of work, that you've never put a foot wrong, that's some going! "wasted" is massively disrespectful, he achieved more than tens of thousands of other pro RL player. So average that he was Young Player of the Year, so average that he gained international honours and remain in a team at the top of the pile. Using Peacock as a yardstick to decree a player as average and wasted is utterly bonkers! I don't 'like' Hock, some of the outhouse stuff he's done on the field never mind off tells you he's a bit of a knobjockey, that said he didn't come up with mental health excuses or other nonsense for his drug taking/behaviour, he took his punishment uncontested unlike quite a few 'average/wasted' players. Has he fulfilled everything he could have done/achieved, no, but in reality who has, you could in many respects say that Hock has overachieved, in another life he like many could have done absolutely nothing or worse led a life of crime. Before we start laying into people we need to take a good look at ourselves first and then look at society as a whole.

saintspete83
Really good player, could have been even better but he didn't have the mindset. Played against him every year as a kid and he was a standout player but his attitude and sportsmanship stunk. There's being hard and competitive and theres being a total pr!ck too. He swayed more to the latter.
Dunbar
Success is the result of talent plus attitude (with a little luck thrown in along the way). The people I admire most in sport are those that wring out as much success as they possibly can from the talent they are given. In almost every field the champion players are not the most talented but those who have worked the hardest to make the most of their talents. To say Hock could have or should have been better is the wrong way to look at it. It should be 'look at this player who worked so hard that he rose to the top of our sport'. The simple fact is that Hock didn't have this attitude and to say he wasted his talent it is to play down the importance of attitude in others' success. Lowdesert
Hock played international level 8 or 9 times. How many can say that? To play for your country is the highest accolade.
Futtocks
Skills and power in abundance, but didn't possess the requisite firepower between the ears. You always knew he was never far from a decision that would embarrass himself and the sport. I really wish him well for his post-playing future, but have a horrible feeling that a negative headline in the local (at least) papers isn't far off. Liverpool Rover
He was a good player, he did play for GB after all, but most people will remember him for all the indiscretions instead. If he had gone to the NRL he could have gone well as he had the ability.

Allora
Just another player that wasted his potential and earning ability. For every Top shelf player there are six Gareth Hocks. Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

Gooleboy
Hock wasn't the first, nor will he be the last to get into a bad situation, and yes he did like to let the opposition know he was around. He could have achieved more, but in his pomp he was a top player for me. I recall Featherstone nearly turning Wigan over in the Cup a few years ago, but Hock was the difference between the two teams. I hope he and his family have a good future, and maybe he will be able to contribute something back to the game.

kiyan
Is this the 3rd or 4th time he has retired? I have lost count! It is definitely above 2 so I guess he has lost count too. Maybe this time he will get the security guard job he wanted a while back. ( though previous drug convictions may rule him out of that) Such a waste! Wish him well - McDonalds and Sainsbury's have great programs.
