Have you played? Just a bit of fun

Lower divisions of the Pennine league, I was ###### but I loved the game and the camaraderie, plus I was fit as a lop

It’s tough game! I feel your pain. I’m also suffering from a lot of old injuries. Truth be told I wouldn’t have ever played if I knew the damage

A few years, played for  Moorside Juniors under 19s, based in Swinton, in the early 1960s. Trainied in the gym at Moorside secondary modern a couplevof weeks. Can't recall the league, can recall the pain.  Played a few games for Manchester YMCA 3rd team (open age union).  Now that REALLY hurt! ??

Believe it or not the area on the Central Coast between Sydney and Newcastle where I was raised didn’t have a team to join. Plenty of teams on other parts of the Central Coast though.

We instead played unregulated scratch games on the school field during our lunch break. Students broke collar bones, got concussion etc. On reflection it was ridiculous and dangerous.

It became touch football when the teachers were around.

When in the US I played high school varsity (American) Football. That was 1.5 to 2 hours of training everyday after school under the watchful eyes of some very serious disciplinarian coaches. The training was intense and brutal. Unless you’ve experienced it, it’s extremely hard to describe to someone not from the US how seriously it’s taken.

Amazingly enough we had to play RU at Airedale High School (Castleford) in the late 1970’s even though our games Teacher Barry Banks played semi pro for York I think.

Played under 17 and under 19’s for Redhill ARLFC in the early 80’s.

Broke my collar bone when 19 and didn’t play for a few months.  In my first game back I played opposite a young lad called Garry Schofield.  After the match which Hunslet Parkside won 14-0 a bloke approached me and asked who I was.  He said he was from BARLA and they had picked a touring squad and would I be prepared to be on a Stand-by list if some of the lads couldn’t make the tour.

Never heard from the bloke again.  It wasn’t till many years later I found out it was the 1983 BARLA tour to New Zealand. I thought they were only going to the south of France!

Mr Banks moved to Hull from York. He was known as the crab for obvious reasons. The ‘83 tour included many lads who went on to make a name for themselves in the pro game. Any idea what happened to that Schofield lad?

Switched codes at Uni at Birmingham then Played National 3 (when it existed) for South London Storm, in and out of the firsts, then RLC premier when that appeared. Played twice for London & South East against Dublin and against the South. Moving back to sheffield played for the Hawks in Pennine Leagues before family came along then just muddled around for a bit of fun and helped form a team for players in the same position in he Midland Merit League for a couple of seasons..

Bit sore still now!

I'm currently playing my first ever season at 33 for my local club.

I've always worked nights and weekends my whole adult life so never had time.

It's been very ...... interesting.

Thanks. The season's ¾ done now.

First training session I had tunnel vision. First game I copped a crusher tackle where my forehead touched my crotch.

I've only fleetingly thought about giving it up. Haha!

Think I'll go again next season.

Of course it Keith Banks can’t believe I got that wrong although it was 40 years ago arrrggghh!

Must be younger than you as the black shirts had turned light grey by the time I played.

Just like your team we played a RL style in all RU games.  One great story was when Mr Banks was away and we got a replacement teacher.  He was very keen and a fervent RU chap.  During lunchtime training he got us to form a line out 10 yards from our line and instructed our Fly Half to kick the ball into touch when he received it.  All of us just looked at each other thinking ‘Why the hell would we kick the ball into touch when we could run with it’.

So the Fly Half duly walloped the ball into touch, and with the sloping pitch the ball travelled about 80 yards before it came to stop.  The replacement Teacher shouted ‘well done’ and then said to our Fly Half ‘Go fetch the ball as you kicked it’.  The Fly Half just looked at him and said ‘###### off, you told me to kick it’.

I played amateur Rugby League in Wellington and Auckland in New Zealand from Under 15's, Under 17's, Under 19's, Reserve grade and played a few games in Premier grade. Before Injuries stopped me from being able to play in my early twenties. I Played in teams and against people in the Junior grade in Wellington who later made the Junior Kiwis and the NRL.
