How much did it cost to run  an academy team in 1997 if you don't mind  me asking, As it is something we should be looking at now. Or  even a Derwent rangers set up.

Don't need academy, that's what local teams are for bringing on the youth, town need a reserve team,so lads get a game and can reach first team level.

Back in the late 50’s we had the First team, an A team and then Town B that played in the local league plus an Under 19 team.  We produced several good players the Martin brothers, Bill and Dennis, Rodney Smith, John Rae, and there was a natural progression for those that were good enough or enthusiastic enough to follow that route.

I remember when .............................

"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimension, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave Hadfield - Independent 25th August 1996.

During my years with the Academy (7 seasons) it was in the main self financing..i.e. separate banking....the main cost was transport and kits.....sometimes overnight stays e.g. versus Hemel Hempstead, Cardiff.

Agree the academy isn't as important as running an 'A' team...if only to keep fringe players match fit.

Ideal for producing/nurturing local talent Keith......if only it could be repeated in these modern times..'.modern but backward' in many ways'.......

All Super League teams will have a reserve team next season , If money from Sky was shared out better, maybe the lower leagues teams could do the same . Players want to play.  As it is now , the Super League Clubs send there players out on season long loans ,or dual reg   So there getting game time somewhere , but in the lower leagues  players often don't get a game ,so go back to the amateur clubs . or drift away from the game . So something needs done to stop this trend carrying on .

Money is the real problem for clubs like Town.  In the 50’s Town had not one, not two but three weekly draws (blue with 5000 subscribers, red with the same number and green with slightly less) plus of course good crowds attending matches. Money wasn’t as tight then and resources could be put into ventures such as Town B and the Under 19’s.   I am sure that if the money could be found from somewhere Town could run a reserve team and possibly an academy to stop the young lads drifting out of he county or even worse out of the game altogether.

Nowadays RL want not just a reserve team but a player pathway. Unfortunately in our area they see Newcastle as providing that pathway. It is therefore not just the funding of a reserve team it is the various age groups below that. In both our cases the biggest cost by far to do this would be transport costs. As with a lot of things in today’s game modern does not always mean best.

Yes Newcastle are providing a pathway for the younger players, but over the years both Haven and Town have had numerous opportunity's with the help of funding to provide these pathways for younger players in the area, but both clubs were more interested in buying success and brining in players from out side the area.

For me Newcastle are something of an enigma. They have probably the best stadium and infrastructure outside of the top flight but their existence very much depends on the financial input of one individual. The fate of the Falcons (recently relegated) Union side underpins much of what happens at Kingston Park . They will never achieve anything under Dean Richards so a predictable lack of progress could easily result in the disaffection of their benefactor. If he walks away Koukash style the whole pyramid could crumble. The perils of sugar daddy sponsorship ( anybody remember Dessy Johnston??).

Haven keighley and I believe Halifax have already been turned down for running reserve teams next season. It's outragous as Halifax and keighley have kept the reserve league going for the last few years . There's gonna be 2 reserve leagues next season so any team should have been allowed in it.

If that is true the League should have no right to refuse any RL Team in running a reserve side , if they can pay their way , it just doesn`t make sense .

halifax were accepted.haven and keighley wer,nt.every club should have a reserve side, which should be partly financed by the rfl.reserve games should be played just before first team games to cut down on travel costs.

Most clubs struggle to get a team out every week , let's kill the amateur game off completely by taking another 20 plus players out of the amateur game.

Haven managed years back so what's changed.players loved the crack at haven playing for reserves and that was rewarded with the title.
