CHAMPIONSHIP & LGE 1

Recommended Posts

Should the Championship and league one go back to one division ? With 25 teams we could have five conferences of 5 teams in each . you play your own conference home and away plus the other four conferences just once either home or away . That equals 28 games per team . Each pool winner would make the play offs along with 6 best wild card teams . The ladder decides who plays who in knock out stages . Top five on ladder receive bye in round one with 6th v 11th , 7th v 10th , 8th v 9th .Round two would see 1st v lowest , 2nd v 7th ranked , 3rd v 6th ranked and 4th v 5th . Semi finals and final. Could the final be played before super league final at old Trafford like the old premierships . Keep the 1895 cup as well as the route to Wembley for lower league teams .

So how are we going to decide the make up of these conferences? Geographic location? That could potentially see a conference of Toulouse, London Skolars, West Wales, Coventry and Doncaster. Be some cracking games there.

Would have to wait and see which teams would be in first . You could have London Broncos back in Championship next season so London derby there possibly .

I suppose we could just have one big league where each team plays the other once either home or away which gives each team 24 games 12 home , 12 away with top 8 making play offs . With less games gives the league more room to play 1895 cup games at weekends instead of mid week .

The gap from Toronto to West Wales in club terms is huge.

P+R between championship and SL, means if the championship and L1 merged then you are looking at putting clubs like West Wales, North Wales, Coventry, even clubs like Hunslet and Keighley are going to struggle in a league where there are relegated SL clubs and clubs aiming for SL.

The gap is too big between those clubs. It serves nobody.

We should have two leagues. One for the Heartland championship clubs, one for development clubs.

who do you class as development clubs ? Toronto ? One league could help new teams to join as less of a league system to climb to get to super league . I am sure any new team looking to join our league would be greatly put off by entering league one at the moment .

Think there’s a massive gulf in class in the Championship between the top 6-8 to the rest of the sides, so including another 11 teams will just make the gap, in some instances, gigantic.

I’d look at restricting the number of sides in the Championship first. Get that down to twelve teams to attempt to promote a better competition throughout and then the other fifteen would be in League One.

As has been pointed out , the gap between the top and bottom would be huge , the only way of reducing that would be a salary cap of £ 100 k , so ending all potential movement up from this league by any club , and causing huge issues with any current overseas expansion clubs

As always , solve one problem , create even more

Don't you remember? We had this, until the RFL fudged it up.

There aren’t enough development sides. Skolars, WWR, Coventry, Newcastle (night be going up), NWC. That’s it. 4-5 teams isn’t enough for a league.

See my previous post, Hemel, Oxford and University of Gloucestershire were all admitted to a "development league" that the RFL later packed with established northern clubs.

You'd still have a mixture of full-time professional teams and part-time semi-pro operations. That doesn't work so well.

If we're looking at a mix of licensing and P&R for traditional areas and expansion clubs, why not have 4 conferences with a Cup competition (1895 Cup) and a play-off for promotion involving all? Some conferences may be stronger than others, but they'll still get to play cross-conference games and it allows expansion sides a quicker route to the top.

North West & East Championship: Leigh, Swinton, Widnes, Oldham, Rochdale, Barrow, Whitehaven, Workington, Newcastle

Yorkshire Championship: York, Fev, Sheffield, Bradford, Halifax, Batley, Dewsbury, Hunslet, Doncaster, Keighley

Southern Championship: Broncos (favourites for drop), Skolars, Coventry, North Wales, West Wales + any further applicants.

Intercontinental Championship: Toulouse, Villeneuve, Carcassonne, Avignon, Ottawa, New York

16 fixture league season. 8 fixture Cup group stage (H&A groups of 5). Then play offs and involving the top 4 from each.

Howso? I don't recall any full time professional team in the third tier except for the "cuckoo" teams, but hey you obviously know more about it from your vantage point of? Just remind me where you are.

My god, that’s daft.

Where's the hostility coming from?

But we're talking about merging the Championship and League 1 into one, and there are full-time professional teams in the former, and perhaps more "cuckoo" teams in the latter in the near future. It's like men vs. boys, and generally not very competitive.
