Betfred Sponsorship Extended

Recommended Posts

For the Championship and League 1:

The sponsorship is more than double the previous amount paid and is for a 2 year period.

This seems to go against the view of certain people who claim League 1 is doomed after this/next season.

Good news, it would be interesting to know what double amounts to.

Exactly. Twice nothing is still nothing.

Given Fred Done's enthusiasm for the game I think it'll be a few quid more than a metaphorical nothing, and the literally nothing days of Eddie Stobbart are long gone thankfully. It's also been announced well before the end of the season, if it was a rock bottom offer the RFL would not be incentivised to accept it so early and for 2 years.

Not sure how asking a question is deemed negative?

As of July ‘17 there were 1650 Betfred stores in the UK, just curious if there is any sign of promotion of the competitions it sponsors in some/any.

It wasnt your post I was relating to.

I have no idea on the promotion point tbh, I dont go in bookies.

A quick look at almost any shirt in the EFL Skybet Championship would suggest not!

The government hasn't changed anything. There have been voluntary / self-imposed restrictions around certain aspects of gambling advertising on TV (the 'whistle-to-whistle' ban came in for the start of this football season) but it's only a voluntary scheme. Betfred are part of that scheme.

A pity he won't put some money behind either of his home town teams Salford and Swinton.

Crazy thought I know, but maybe he is looking out for the interests of his business and sees league-wide sponsorship as a better return?

How often do you see bookies throwing money around "just because"?

Brilliant news that a company has faith in our Sport.

Out of curiosity, didn't the Government put an embargo on sport sponsorship, by gambling organisations, a while back?

You can't have it on kids shirts AFAIK hence why SL Jr size kits don't have the league logo on and clubs in the football championship for example have different sponsors on their Jr sized shirts.

Celtic also do shirts with and without sponsorship in adult sizes too.

Just been right geeky and actually done the research into this.

10/20 premier league teams sponsored by betting.

14/24 championship teams

Interestingly only 2/23 league 1 and 1/24 league 2.

So yes, you are quite right, that is an extraordinary amount of betting sponsorship in the top divisions!

Online betting and bookies are the new fags and booze of sponsorship its all over every sport - though I've found it to be even more prevalent in Oz for example than in the UK as it is actively included in the presentation of sports rather than just the adverts etc.

The prevalance of betting sponsorship in the Premier League is down to gambling advertising regulations in Asia.

Betting advertising in most of Asia is either heavily restricted or banned, but those bans don't apply to foreign sponsorships and, given the PLs popularity in Asia, it's an easy and relatively cheap (OPE paid Huddersfield around £1m last season) loophole.

The Championship also has a decent amount of international appeal, so gambling sponsorship appeals for similar reasons. For L1 and L2, not so much.

People like you dont deserve our sport, its this kind of garbage attitude that holds back the game. Its moronic statements like this and on social media that must make prospective sponsors and investors back away in a hurry from our sport.

Its great to see a company not only carrying on a sponsorship but actually upping the value in a period where its difficult to get any kind of sponsorship in sport other than football. They have obviously seen good payback on the last deal which is something the RFL should be using immediately to other prospective sponsors or investors, including Sky or another TV channel.
