THINGS ARE HAPPENING BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE DRAGONS

A post-season review at St George Illawarra could claim battling coach Paul McGregor
St George Illawarra’s subpar season could claim coach Paul McGregor’s job with the Dragons to embark on a post-season review which is expected to end his time at the club.

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor could be one game away from being sacked as Dragons coach.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal that, despite a two-year contract extension earlier this year, officials are resigned to having to make the difficult call after a disastrous season.

Dragons chief executive Brian Johnston refused to guarantee McGregor’s future when contacted.

Johnston said there will be a review of the entire football department after their final game of the season against the Titans this weekend before the board will then make a decision on the coach.

“Nothing has changed,” Johnston said. “There will be no decision on any position until after the review.”

Sources have revealed McGregor was struggling to maintain support key powerbrokers before Sunday’s abysmal 42-14 loss to the Wests Tigers at the SCG.

They will finish the season in 15th position, ahead of only the Gold Coast Titans after being tipped as a top-four side and possible premiers earlier in the season. `It is their worst finish as a joint venture.

The Dragons have faced a massive social media backlash from their fans over the coaching position.

McGregor is rumoured to be on $600,000-a-season which would force the Dragons to pay out $1.2 million before signing a new coach.

Two names have been mentioned as possible replacements – Sydney Roosters assistant Craig Fitzgibbon and former Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan, who still has to be cleared.

McGregor could not be contacted for comment. He has coached the Dragons since 2014 when he took over from Steve Price.

What do you reckon RLW? Should he stay or should he go?

The 2019 season seemed to promise so much more than has been achieved.

No brainer . He’s had more than a fair shot and totally underdelivered . His roster has been a lot better than this , even with injuries . This year is the nadir and it’s gone totally stale under him and change is needed . No doubt in my mind he’ll go

Looks like he’s a dead man walking there. It was only early on this season that Dragons extended his contract by two years. Pre season there were high hopes of a top four finish.

He’s been at the helm about six years and looks to have gone stale as David describes it above.

The promised review won’t show him in a good light.

Having said that some people say he’s on $600,000 a year so if this right it will cost BIG money to pay him off.

Would be cheaper to hire a hitman, or is that what you mean by 'deadman walking'??

1.2 million apparently . Still I think he’s a goner and I wouldn’t be surprised to see old favourite Fitzgibbon at the helm after serving his apprenticeship at Bondi

2nd-worse defence this year. They conceded 100 points more than Wests and this equates to 6 ladder spots.

20 was a magic number for a few teams this year. I took 3 examples from the top, middle and bottom - Storm, Wests and St George. Every time they scored 20 points or more, they won. (except the Storm/Wests game which Storm won 24-22)

St George's problem was they only reached the 20-point mark 5 times.

Also teams which conceded less than 20 points a game all currently sit in the top 8. To show what a magic number 20 is, Wests conceded 20.04pts/game and aren't in the 8.

That’s a bit harsh on the Simms as I think they’ve become very solid and reliable. Frizzell on the other hand has gone off the boil and looks some way from his best a couple of years ago

It is high time he did the right thing by the club and resigned or the board has to cut it's loses and send McGregor packing.
