Self drive car madnes

Recommended Posts

If all cars are self drive fine, if no cars are fully self drive fine, if there is a mix madness

Humans are too unpredictable so a mix of human & machine control is a recipe for disaster

There have already been issues with for instance the software which manages lane changing -  https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/24/biker_sues_general_motors_autonomous_car/

I ride a motorbike and dont fancy getting sideswipped by a robo car which failed to notice me

As opposed to a human driven one, which is statistically more likely to do it.

The "mix" question is a good point though, but it's the human drivers that screw it up. I think certain sections of motorway will go fully self-drive first. It's the easiest one to manage from the software perspective.

The insurance question is a good one - basically it goes to basic 3FT for everyone in a fully self drive world as all the crash claims would be between manufacturers.

"I am the avenging angel; I come with wings unfurled, I come with claws extended from halfway round the world. I am the God Almighty, I am the howling wind. I care not for your family; I care not for your kin. I come in search of terror, though terror is my own; I come in search of vengeance for crimes and crimes unknown. I care not for your children, I care not for your wives, I care not for your country, I care not for your lives." - (c) Jim Boyes - "The Avenging Angel"

Anything not part of the self-drive network causes problems, though.

So that's non-self-drive cars, people wanting to cross the road, cyclists, people not wanting to cross the road, that cat there, the bus, oh look whatever that is ...

I'm yet to be convinced there's any role for self drive away from motorways.

And in the worldwide scheme of things our junctions are VERY close together and our motorways narrow - it is one of the issues they are having with the concept of road trains where semi autonomous trucks drive nose to tail with the lead one taking control over the others. 3 lanes and one of those 4 trucks long in the centre lane makes getting on and off very hard

Yup - even with motorways I'm not convinced it can be done without major changes to how the roads are set up.

I mean, if you started now and cars were self-drive then you'd build everything differently but we are where we are.

I really would never trust a self drive car. It is impossible to test anywhere near every possible driving scenario and the amount of possible issues with them is mind boggling. Sticker or scratches on street signs being able to confuse them shows how far off this technology is. More worryingly they would be easy prey for hackers.
