Last time I was in Lincoln (admittedly over 20 years ago) a lot of the pubs were tied houses for the Mansfield brewery (and therefore outlets for Marksmen as in the defunct team). Ghastly beer. Given the history of that brewery, that might mean that there are a lot of pubs selling Marstons there now.

The Swan and Railway in Wigan re-opened yesterday after a while being closed.

Once a thriving real ale pub its fortunes dived and it became scroats dive before it closed. A sympathetic refurb has been  revealing more of original mosaic tiled flooring. Haven't had a chance to visit yet but reports are good.

The restored back room has been named the Syd Abram lounge in on honour of the player who scored the first try at Wembley and I believe contains some of Syd's memorabilia.

For those visiting Wigan by train its the one opposite the North Western station.

Any other pubs worth a mention?

Another expansion to the Wigan pub scene occurred last year. Some of you will know The John Bull Chop House in Coopers row, last year they cleared out the pool room upstairs and installed a complete new bar specialising in cask and craft beer and real cider. They have named it Hop House at the Chop House, it. has already won several awards.

Sounds like a trip out to Wigan is in order. The only hitch is that there are no toilets on the pacer trains from Wigan to Southport and from Southport home! Can get a tad uncomfortable to say the least! ?

Talking about pubs and trains there are now a number of very good micro pubs to be found very close to the railway stations between Waterloo and Southport. It's becoming quite popular to travel along the line stopping off to visit along the way. Here are a few worth visiting:

Waterloo - Stamps Two, Trap & Hatch, Four Ashes

Crosby - Stamps, The Corner Post, The Liverpool Pigeon

Formby - The Railway (real ale can be a bit hit and miss)

Freshfield - The Beer Station, The Freshfield

Hillside - The Pines, The Grasshopper

Southport - The Tap & Bottle

The Three Pigeons in Halifax is an Ossett Brewery pub. They brew some excellent beers, Silver King, Treacle Stout, Excelsior, Yorkshire Brunette.  It's an art deco classic (I'm an art deco nut) and handy for the Shay.

Any coming to Dewsbury by train should call at the West Riding Refreshment Rooms, on the station.  They have a regularly changing menu of cask ales.  But they always have Taylors Landlord - my favourite.

The Cellar Bar near Batley station is similar in its selection of beers too.

Fernandes Tap and Bier Keller in Wakefield is worth a try, good selection of cask ales, plus Belgian bottled ales and Kriek on draught.  Just off Kirkgate.  If you're walking from the town centre to Belle Vue.

Some of the trains to Southport I have been on have had toilets.

Speaking of Southport did you know that the Tap & Bottle in Cambridge Arcade is owned by Julian Burgess, brother of Victoria who has the  John Bull, who are the offspring of the famed Harold and Margaret long time landlords of the Bull.

Always worth jumping off the Wigan Southport train at Burscough Bridge to call in The Hop Vine, excellent for food if you can get a table. A short walk down the canal takes you to The Ship ( blood tub ) another one good for food.

Popped into Wigan Central after Friday's game, Weird Beard takeover on for Beer Week, sampled a few different styles, all bang on!

Even though our utter, unquestioned dominance in the sport has ended, all Wiganers believe that we are really just indulgently letting the other teams win for a while in order to make it more interesting.

I am just over and frankly you do not have to worry. Great pubs everywhere.

Meltons is recommended for a meal.

The bar at Huddersfield Station is good - Head of Steam?

Great little micropub at Carnforth station - if there's 10 in its quite full

Yes, it's The Head of Steam. There's also The King's Head at the other end of the station buildings. The Sportsman is worth a visit. It's just a few minutes walk from the station.

Is the sportsman's the one around the corner from the station after you go under the railway bridge, if that's the one you mean its a cracker.

That's the one.

As well as beers etc, they also do pies of various flavours.

That looks really nice now compared to the last time I was in there before this refurb, probably about 5 years ago, when it looked a complete dive. Great to see an old pub on the up again.

Similar LIV in York , another one was The Quiet Woman ''where cross grained men could spend a few hours in peace''

pub sign was a headless woman , head neatly tucked under her arm.

Bay Horse on Wincolmlee, closed down some time ago sadly. Although if you did turn up you would have the consolation that the excellent Whalebone is only a few minutes' walk away and you can also take in the Banksy on Scott Street bridge as well as some other fine street art.

If you start at the York Tap on the station you will start on a winner.

It's good but I like the Sheffield version a lot more.

On more than one occasion we have caught the train to Sheffield and not ventured away from Midland Station before catching the last train back to Hull.

Just visited the Swan & Railway after its refurb (mentioned earlier), absolutely stunning.

The Syd Abram lounge has some great stuff in there. Includes Syd Abrams original shirt and shorts worn when he scored the first ever try at Wembley.

If you are into rugby league history get your backside in there.
