Jeff Stein Posted September 18, 2019 Share Posted September 18, 2019 Last time I was in Lincoln (admittedly over 20 years ago) a lot of the pubs were tied houses for the Mansfield brewery (and therefore outlets for Marksmen as in the defunct team). Talking about pubs and trains there are now a number of very good micro pubs to be found very close to the railway stations between Waterloo and Southport. It's becoming quite popular to travel along the line stopping off to visit along the way. Here are a few worth visiting: Waterloo - Stamps Two, Trap & Hatch, Four Ashes Crosby - Stamps, The Corner Post, The Liverpool Pigeon Formby - The Railway (real ale can be a bit hit and miss) Freshfield - The Beer Station, The Freshfield Hillside - The Pines, The Grasshopper Southport - The Tap & Bottle "it is a well known fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it." They brew some excellent beers, Silver King, Treacle Stout, Excelsior, Yorkshire Brunette. It's an art deco classic (I'm an art deco nut) and handy for the Shay. Any coming to Dewsbury by train should call at the West Riding Refreshment Rooms, on the station. They have a regularly changing menu of cask ales. But they always have Taylors Landlord - my favourite. The Cellar Bar near Batley station is similar in its selection of beers too. Fernandes Tap and Bier Keller in Wakefield is worth a try, good selection of cask ales, plus Belgian bottled ales and Kriek on draught. Just off Kirkgate. Some of the trains to Southport I have been on have had toilets. Speaking of Southport did you know that the Tap & Bottle in Cambridge Arcade is owned by Julian Burgess, brother of Victoria who has the John Bull, who are the offspring of the famed Harold and Margaret long time landlords of the Bull. If anyone does try it let us know what its like. As part of Beer Week Hophurst Brewery having open sessions today at the brewery with a bus from Wigan town centre to the brewery at HIndley. Details here Bus timetable. A Beer Bus will connect Wigan town centre to Hophurst Brewery in Hindley, which is hosting an Open Day. The bus will drop-off and pick-up (in both directions) at Formby’s in Hindley. Even though our utter, unquestioned dominance in the sport has ended, all Wiganers believe that we are really just indulgently letting the other teams win for a while in order to make it more interesting. The Syd Abram lounge has some great stuff in there. Includes Syd Abrams original shirt and shorts worn when he scored the first ever try at Wembley.
