Scubby Posted September 21, 2019 Share Posted September 21, 2019 I would imagine that up to half the clubs in the last decade have been spending no where near the cap which - given the cap is low anyway - means the top clubs will always be there around GF time. Wire haven’t won the title since the 50s, Hull 80s and Catalans never. The fact that Gary Hetherington was able to keep the "golden" Leeds squad together for so long is testament to his ability to run a rugby club. Plenty of them could have gone elsewhere for more money. That said perhaps the cap dictated then that any gain in money wasn't all that much anyway? Leeds has an exceptionally talented group which they managed to keep together over a long period, Wigan have a great academy, Saints have that winning mentality, Bradford probably got lucky at the right time to have success. Denton Rovers RLFC Posted September 21, 2019 Share Posted September 21, 2019 Not just money but historic reasons as well, changes in terms of demographics, average incomes, population migration or stagnation e.g. Hull where population has reduced by 20% since the 1930-1950 period and of course geographic location. History wise Wigan have always been successful, so with regular/historic success that perpetuates popularity and garners more talent/interest from local clubs/schools with the thinking more chance of success (and good salary) than at other teams. That built up support over many many decades can still be latent even when your team isn't doing so well, Wigan in the early 80s had crowds as low as 4,000 for a couple of their home games, that would be virtually unthinkable even if they had have been relegated when they should have when they cheated the system. But the support/wanting to play for Wigan was still there, it just needed success and it wasn't long before they got back to their glory periods of yore. Areas that have lower demographic or lower education standards can see more kids wanting to go into sport as a way to have a career/earn money, we see this not just in rugby but many sports around the world, it's basically a way out, that's not a snide jab, that's a reality, same with the armed forces, particularly the army, less so the Navy and much less (IME) the RAF, seen by many even now with dwindling numbers. Whilst some of the answers are some of the pieces needed to build the jigsaw of winning Super League, it’s not that simple. There’s a need to peak at the right times. Leeds and Wigan perfected that at different periods of history, whereas Saints have struggled to work out how to do this at the right times. If that's the system in play then that's the system that the good clubs play to. If we had the top of the table as champions then the better clubs would play towards that instead.
