The St Louis Cardinals travel to Atlanta for a best of five series (Braves get the first two games at home). Gerrumonside ref Posted October 5, 2019 Author Share Posted October 5, 2019 The Braves pitched a shutout 3-0 game 2 win at home to tie the series 1-1 with the Cards who had won a rollercoaster first game 7-6 in Atlanta. Meanwhile the Nationals chalked up ten strikeouts thanks to Strasburg to level things up in game 2 of the series in LA which they won 4-2. Previously in game 1 the Dodgers had thrashed Washington 6-0. In the American League, the Yankees and Astros are one up after home wins in their respective series with the Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays. Thought I was seeing a possible moment of history when the Washington pitcher Anibal Sanchez did a 7 innings no hit stint before finally losing out on his perfect game chances to a centre field fly ball that split the fielders. Anyway he pitched a 2-0 shutout of the Cardinals as the National take a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series. Tonight game 2 starts at 9pm. I read a quote in The Athletic about how their success was ‘striking a blow against the computers’ just in terms of how the team was put together compared to other notable MLB front office operations. I only saw the first two games of the series against the Cards, but you can definitely argue they’ve the look and feel of a team of destiny. Gerrumonside ref Posted October 31, 2019 Author Share Posted October 31, 2019 After dropping three straight at home to turn a 2-0 advantage in the World Series to a 3-2 deficit, the Washington Nationals won the last two games of the series in Houston. All seven games were won by the away team which must be something of a record. The Nationals left it late scoring their decisive runs in the 7th of 9 innings to win what was essentially an intense pitching battle. As a side note, I’d put a cheeky fiver on them at 16/1 when they appeared in the wildcard game so I’ve won the princely sum of £80. This was based on nothing more than the form of the Nationals who had made a bad start to the season, but had finished strongly and also a tip that the relative strengths of the pitching lineups were more important in the playoffs than home run specialists. In this regard, Washington matched up well against likely opponents the LA Dodgers in the National League and I figured if they got that far they might build momentum to go all the way. Must admit I’ve followed the series mainly through match reports, but have enjoyed the playoffs generally and the games that I saw which have mainly included Washington. It’s taught me much about how the pitching works, why they’re trying a variety of speeds and placements plus how the relief pitching works. I’ve enjoyed it more as a result. In terms of stateside sport now for me a feast of NFL and NBA action for me with some attention paid to the future prospects in college sports.
