The NL divisional playoff round is about to get underway (10pm our time).

The St Louis Cardinals travel to Atlanta for a best of five series (Braves get the first two games at home).

Later the Washington Nationals head west to play the Los Angeles Dodgers for their best of five series.

Anyone fancy an upset?

The Braves pitched a shutout 3-0 game 2 win at home to tie the series 1-1 with the Cards who had won a rollercoaster first game 7-6  in Atlanta.

Meanwhile the Nationals chalked up ten strikeouts thanks to Strasburg to level things up in game 2 of the series in LA which they won 4-2.  Previously in game 1 the Dodgers had thrashed Washington 6-0.

In the American League, the Yankees and Astros are one up after home wins in their respective series with the Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays.

Have we mentioned this?

Minnesota now has a 15 game post-season losing streak stretching back to 2004. Twelve of those fifteen have come against New York. The other three were against Oakland in 2006.

Minnesota bravely make it 16 games and can now spend the winter wondering why they forgot to play baseball for three games.

Annoyingly, St Louis have yet to be eliminated so the dread World Series between them and New York is still possible.

The Cole train was no fire last nght!!!!

Bring it on!!

Now then, it's a race between Sandie....and Fairburn....and the little man is in........yeees he's in.

I, just like those Castleford supporters felt that the ball should have gone to David Plange but he put the bit betwen his teeth...and it was a try

Kevin Ward - best player I have ever seen

The real Mick Gledhill is what you see on here, a Bradford fan ........, but deep down knows that Bradford are just not good enough to challenge the likes of Leeds & St Helens.

Recorded last night’s Nationals vs Cardinals game in St Louis and watched it back early this morning.

Thought I was seeing a possible moment of history when the Washington pitcher Anibal Sanchez did a 7 innings no hit stint before finally losing out on his perfect game chances to a centre field fly ball that split the fielders.

Anyway he pitched a 2-0 shutout of the Cardinals as the National take a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Tonight game 2 starts at 9pm.

The timing Gods were on my side last night meaning I could watch the whole of the Astros v Yankees game - good tough win for the Astros with Cole having one of his poor games of 8 inning with no runs, 7K's and the win!!

And, with Washington's sweep of St Louis, it now means that of the 30 MLB franchises, 29 have been to the World Series.

Only Seattle, who have been trying since 1977, haven't got there yet.

It’s a great story the one about the Washington Nationals.

I read a quote in The Athletic about how their success was ‘striking a blow against the computers’ just in terms of how the team was put together compared to other notable MLB front office operations.

I only saw the first two games of the series against the Cards, but you can definitely argue they’ve the look and feel of a team of destiny.

Just remember that they are the old Montreal Expos.

After dropping three straight at home to turn a 2-0 advantage in the World Series to a 3-2 deficit, the Washington Nationals won the last two games of the series in Houston.

All seven games were won by the away team which must be something of a record.

The Nationals left it late scoring their decisive runs in the 7th of 9 innings to win what was essentially an intense pitching battle.

As a side note, I’d put a cheeky fiver on them at 16/1 when they appeared in the wildcard game so I’ve won the princely sum of £80.

This was based on nothing more than the form of the Nationals who had made a bad start to the season, but had finished strongly and also a tip that the relative strengths of the pitching lineups were more important in the playoffs than home run specialists.

In this regard, Washington matched up well against likely opponents the LA Dodgers in the National League and I figured if they got that far they might build momentum to go all the way.  Hurray for me!

It is. First time it's happened in any best of 7 series in any of the US sports.

Not a huge fan of the Nationals, and my Baltimore supporting best mate probably is in funeral attire today, and I really don't enjoy baseball that is *all* about the home run but ... credit to them for sticking in there, for some great pitching from both teams, and for a series that, whilst not a classic, went the distance.

Now, time to warm up the hot stove whilst our nation turns its lonely eyes to college hoops.

Must admit I’ve followed the series mainly through match reports, but have enjoyed the playoffs generally and the games that I saw which have mainly included Washington.

It’s taught me much about how the pitching works, why they’re trying a variety of speeds and placements  plus how the relief pitching works.  I’ve enjoyed it more as a result.

In terms of stateside sport now for me a feast of NFL and NBA action for me with some attention paid to the future prospects in college sports.
