On the wider subject of The Raiders and John Bateman .... interesting he’s picked this week to come out and say he wants an upgrade or may look to ‘weigh up my options’ . How about that , and why right before a GF ?

On Hodgson I know there’s a probe into his non-HIA , so maybe they’re just keeping him out the limelight and away from questioning ( hopefully )

Yeah I read that, it doesn't come across too well. I understand his logic but at the end of the day he signed a contract and if he was a flop would have expected that contract to be honoured.

Looks like a journalist asked the question and he answered it honestly.

As is often the case, the published article is quite brief with just the "juicy bits" so it's hard to judge his comments isolated from the full interview.

He also had a lot of good things to say about Ricky Stuart in the article and is extremely grateful to him.

Either way, such reviews to contracts are frequent in both the NRL and SL.

On the face of it appears he needs to learn to be much more media savvy about what he says and when as RL is reported on in a vastly different way in Australia compared to the UK.

On the other hand, both this and the Hodgson "rumour" might just as easily be clever mind games by Canberra, that is my suspicion given the timing.

Let’s be honest, a block of cheese has more brain cells than Bateman

And today we have an article in seriousaboutrl where Bateman states the interviewer was incorrect in his interpretation of what was said and he wants to stay at Canberra with an extended, not renegotiated, contract. Appears the interviewer went for the "sensationalist" approach in their report.

I'm surprised that anybody is ever surprised or offended that players and agents review contracts and weigh up their options.

God knows why it is even a story.

Professionals in severely time limited career would like to make as much money as possible. I mean, it's kinda obvious.

I wouldn't say I was offended by it but it does annoy me when players decide they want to renegotiate a contract signed in good faith just because their stock has gone up.

Bateman signed a 3 year deal which would see him earn between £570k and £650k over that period.  Now, after year one he sounds like he wants to negotiate.  If it is an extension then fine but if it is simply more money because he has a growing reputation then I am not fine with that.  The Raiders gave him security with a 3 year deal and I am sure 18 months ago he was delighted with it.

I am happy for professionals (in all areas)to get what they can when they can but I have an old fashioned view that when you sign a contract you honour it.

Is it standard?

If you sign an open ended contract of employment then negotiating any salary or other benefit change on an annualised basis is common enough.

But if I signed a fixed term contract (which is essentially what sports contracts are) with an individual to work for a 3 year period for an agreed remuneration I wouldn't expect them to back to me after year 1 and negotiate for a better deal.  Maybe at the end of the contract or if they wanted to discuss an extension beyond the 3 year period but I'm not keen on the request to simply be excused from the remainder of contract because you can earn something better elsewhere

The contract he originally agreed, is obviously what they believed he was worth. Now he's had a good season he's worth more to them. So pay up or someone else will

Would you be ok with clubs reducing the pay of a player mid contract because they have had a poor season?

Does that allow for the raiders to reduce his contract if he fails to perform next season?

oops just sen post above!

Now then, it's a race between Sandie....and Fairburn....and the little man is in........yeees he's in.

I, just like those Castleford supporters felt that the ball should have gone to David Plange but he put the bit betwen his teeth...and it was a try

The real Mick Gledhill is what you see on here, a Bradford fan ........, but deep down knows that Bradford are just not good enough to challenge the likes of Leeds & St Helens.

Players do get contracts upgraded mind so I guess he’s trying his luck while he’s on a high

The much renowned 'Godfather' of our club (yes our club David) was very much against players personally dealing in contracts...he reckoned it would eventually damage the game financially.......is he being proved correct considering the wages dished out now ?

Absolutely, I'm a firm believer in you should be paid accordingly to your performance. See players in the lower leagues who are on win bonus there try there hearts out.
