It takes reasonableness to end that discussion.

I’ve seen it all over social media this last week.

Interesting. I’ve seen it a bit on twitter but only from the obvious sources - England RL etc - yet on Facebook I’ve seen loads of ads for the union World Cup - even though I don’t follow anything to do with union - and nothing for the Nines.

As for the crowd size, seems odd having it on Friday night and Saturday, rather than Sat and Sun. We shouldn’t underestimate the problem of getting to Parramatta after work on a Friday night. For a lot of people that would have been just too hard. I’d expect Saturday to be much better attended

They can afford better bots than us.

I know quite a few from Canberra traveling up to Sydney today for the 9s. Hopefully they get a better crowd today.

No doubt they are trialling times and days and they will have a review.

I suspect TV likes a Friday night slot. The early Friday NRL game gets reduced attendances but TV gets what TV wants.

I watched Eng v Wal and Aus v NZ and a bit of PNG v USA. First impressions were positive. Certainly much preferred it to RU 7's, which I find much too open.

I will definitely watch a bit more tomorrow, and I definitely think it's something that could be worth holding in the UK in future.

RU Sevens is a victim of its own success. Back before it became a professional standalone circuit with Olympic funding, the players were unfit enough that you'd see a fairly entertaining spectacle for reasons both good and bad. There was the attitude that it wasn't for seriously cash-backed trophies, so players would try some extravagant options, and the resulting mistakes and successes were quite fun. I never had any guilt about watching the Middlesex Sevens, because it was interesting to see British RU players actually attempting the running and handling side of the game.

Now, with some of the best speed athletes of the sport coining it in (not to mention Olympic glory at stake) as Sevens specialists, a break can be too hard to close down, so opponents save their energy and wait their turn.

Whisper it, but what they really need at this stage is a player (or two) extra on the pitch.

Good to watch but why does it have to be so complicated with totally unnecessary rule and scoing changes? As a deveopment tool, its a mess.

I agree. 20-40 and 5 point trys are unnecessary. The bonus you get for scoring under the posts is an easier conversion.

Like you Gibbo and yourself FD, I want to like it, but I struggle to get past the novelty concept and know that all my friends have the same difficulty.

Likewise, season has ended. Even the test matches later this year will be difficult for many to get interested in after a completed club season.

Hopefully it’s a big crowd today. I would like to see the concept succeed, but, my instincts suggest international 9s will only be a novelty in Australia.

I thought that too, but have potentially changed my mind. It allows teams that have scored in the last minute to get within a try to keep the game alive.

Teams just have to get better at receiving kick offs. It would appear more practice has been spent on retrieving your own kick offs.

That's a fair point, but I think the balance is wrong at the moment.

In 13s it is too big a gamble to do short kicks, in 9s it is every time and worth it. The amount of space gives the kicking team an advantage.

I hear that too. As my above edit, take it back to scoring team receives. That means they need to go the length to score if they really need to

Yeah I think that could be better. I'd like to see kicks have to go 20m instead of 10, see if that helps.
