Oh My God!...it must be karma...mine was also an old beat up Ford Escort...red and white...feel that power when you hit the gas!

It had a big crack in the windshield and bald tires.

In 1983:

a 1970 Mark 1 Escort  (VVH 632 J)

£120

debatable colour (Brown/purple/plum - seriously oxidised)

more filler than metal in the panels.

Flat out it could reach almost 60 mph (tailwind and downhill)

In summer, the metal steering wheel got so hot you couldn't touch it.

Gearbox was fantastic; could change from 4th to 1st directly and pretty much stand it on its nose, which was useful as the brakes were non-existent.

Completed a whole driving lesson once with no clutch (cable broke)

...but when you're 18, wheels is wheels ?

Triumph Herald cost me £80.

The cheapest car I ever bought was a Morris Marina for which I paid £25. I drove it for 6 months. Talk about throwing money at it, at one point I had to change a brake bulb* After the 6 months I took it for a free " pre MoT". The mechanic asked me if I was having a laugh?

At that point I took it to a scrap yard and they gave me £30 for it.

*In those days " consumables" like bulbs, points  and spark plugs were freely available in Coventry as everyone knew somebody on one of the tracks in car factories.

First car was an orange Morris Mini, Reg 43 BAO.  After a while  I repainted the roof mat black with Dulux paint so it looked 'flash'.

I kerbed it once going round a corner and the drivers seat and passengers seat both fell through the floor. Easily solved though with a plank of wood placed strategically over the holes.

(Funnily though, I can remember the registration no's of my first two cars, but can't remember the one I drive now!!)

Jam Eater  1.(noun. jam eeter) A Resident of Whitehaven or Workington. Offensive.  It is now a term of abuse that both towns of West Cumbria use for each other especially at Workington/Whitehaven rugby league derby matches.

E reg Austin Mini Countryman Estate, Red with rotting wood trim, fitted wide steel wheels and sprayed the roof matt black. Bought it whilst still 16 and passed my test in it, was due to take it the day after my 17th birthday but it was snowed off. I had been driving cars about off-road  for a few years (honest officer) and worked at a garage.

It served it's purpose with the back seat down, it was difficult to get time with the girlfriend alone at our homes, and was sold for a small profit which went towards the insurance on a Ford Cortina mk 2 1600E Complete with Brown vynal roof and metallic gold paintwork, ye-hah?

A bright orange Ford Escort, W-reg, bought from a back street garage for £600 in about 1986-ish, can't remember the exact year tbh. I loved it.

I'd driven my dad's car before that, after passing my test at 18, only pranged it once too, on the gatepost the first time I ever attempted to park it down the drive at home. Oops! Sorry dad!!

A Renault Clio.

I had it for years.    It was basically indestructible.

I took a whole bunch of garden clippings to the tip in it once, and forever after it was infested with spiders.

I had a mate who got his dream car, a Ford Cortina mk3 2000GXL top of the range, beautiful, drove it home reversed it down the driveway of his parent's house and ran over his mothers 7 year old cat laid snoozing in the sunshine. Forever after she referred to it as 'that bloody car' and point blank refused to go in it?

I'm the same Cars and Motorbikes going back to the 1960s no problem, anything up to 10 years ago is a complete blank. I have a photo of my current car and bike's number plates on the mobile now.

First car I drove was a Blue Mini Clubman, DPC 808 J

First car I owned was a Fiat 131 Mirafiori  RPL 678 R

I’m the same.

I can even remember some of the reg plates of cars my Dad drove.

BVH232S really stands out for some reason

But not the cars I own now!  No idea of their reg plates.
