The Wests Tigers will have a $1.7 million war chest for next season with the NRL approving the medical retirement of Kiwi international Ben Matulino and the club agreeing to release Ryan Matterson effective immediately.

Matulino injured his knee in Round 14 this year and medical advice was that he shouldn't return. Under the most recent deal with the Players Association, clubs would normally be responsible for payin contracts for their full duration but the NRL would continue to count that money as part of the salary cap. By getting the NRL to sign off on medical retirements, the club still pays the player out but the money isn't counted under the cap. The biggest problem for clubs is establishing that this isn't some chronic injury which the player brought with him to the club.

Wow this off season has been brutal in terms of forced retirements. 3 big names already

At relatively young ages too...............unusual as well as generally with better conditioning, players have been able to play on later. It shows how tough the sport is, particularly on the joints - shoulder and knee in particular

I think they all finished this year. Farah and Cronk were both >35, Michael Gordon was 36 and Gallen was 38 by the time he played his last game.

Benji will be 35 before 2020 season starts and Gavin Cooper and James Graham will be 35 before the season ends.
