Very sad news indeed.  His career started at Blackpool Borough after he knocked the door and asked for a trial whilst on a weekend break with his girlfriend.

My abiding memory is of him playing for Great Britain in the famous third test win in Sydney in 1988.  He was one of the few Scottish-born players to play at the very top level in Rugby League and it’s poignant that his passing came on the eve of a Great Britain match.

I understand he was playing Masters Rugby League somewhere fairly recently.  A real character and he also scored the last-ever try at Borough Park.

RIP

Absolutely fantastic bloke. Tough as old boots & hard as nails on the pitch. Many feared him, everyone respected him. Total gentleman off the pitch. Always had time for a chat. Big guy, big heart, big hole now left.

RIP Hughey

So very sorry to hear of this. I played with Hugh in my first international games. He was an inspiration to the younger players in the squad and always had time to give you friendly and useful advice. Really sad to hear the news and all the best to his family. He was a real gentleman and I will remember him with great fondness and admiration.

I met him a few times over the years and he was a fantastic lad on and off the field.  Last time I met him was at a veteran’s tournament in Helensburgh of all places and he remembered me, which didn’t half make my day considering I’m nothing to him but a fairly star-struck fan.

Still gutted as he simply wasn’t old at all.

My abiding memory of Hugh is when he was captain of Carlisle and after a hard fought game against Dews he shook the ref’s hand and marched straight to the burger van in his kit for a plate of chips. Whole hearted player and I shall light a candle to his memory. Requiesat  in Pachem.

Some nice words from the BBC presenting panel at half time this morning.

Many years ago we were both  browsing the same  book section in a bookstore in Leeds and got chatting.  Really nice fellow I always remembered that and I used to enjoy his posts on social media.  Terrible news RIP

Great player from zilch to GB in 4 years how many players can say that.

I was wanting to set up on here a RL Obituary Thread like the AOB one but obviously don't want many entrants, just so we can reflect on certain players and their careers.

Feel free, you wouldn’t get any complaints from me anyway.
