How do you stop a beast like Payne Haas?

Recommended Posts

The guy is a man mountain but has footwork and athleticism to go with it. Unbelievable ability.

And he wasn’t even the best prop yesterday, Taukieaho for me is probably the best out there. Fifita is sadly a shadow of his former self but there are some terrific props in our game with Fonua Blake, Thompson, Papali and Warea Hargreaves all outstanding. The latter has really impressed me in the last couple of seasons. The improvement under Trent Robinson is phenomenal. He’s cut out the stupidity in his game, silly errors and attempt to just knock peoples block off and he’ll now do effective 60 minute stints in the middle of the park. Great engine

Payne Haas is simply an incredible athlete. He comfortably led the run metres and tackle breaks for all the props in the NRL this year. He even ranks up near the top in tackles made.

To do all that in the toughest league in the world at just 19 year of age is remarkable. And then he goes on to play for Australia and the Kangaroos rely on him to make an impact against a dominant Tongan pack.

There is every chance he will overtake Taumalolo as the best forward in the game in the next year or so.

I agree that Warea Hargreaves has improved under Robinson but he is still the most penalised prop in the NRL... shows how bad he was before!

He does play big minutes though which will skew things........so, given your penchant for stats, how does his penalty per minute ratio compare with other props?

Warea Hargeaves has the worst penalty per minute ratio of all the props in the NRL.  He concedes a penalty every 49 minutes.  Payne Haas, for example, concedes a penalty every 150 minutes.

I am not saying Hargreaves is not a good prop, I really rate him, just that he remains one of the most penalised players in the NRL despite an improvement in that area.

Even a penalty every 49 minutes doesn't sound too high but in tight games discipline can be a key factor.

Interesting, thanks. So he basically concedes 1 penalty a game. Given he’s the enforcer in the pack, it’s natural that he will concede more penalties than most.

Furthermore, as he does more minutes than most, he’s also more likely to concede more penalties as he will be more fatigued. But the flip side is that it allows the coach to rotate other players more, generating more impact

He is young and athletic and looks  like he could terrorise defenders. But, to be fair, so did T-Rex back in 2009. I thought T-Rex was going to muller England for the next decade and he just lost his way. Lets see how Haas develops over the next couple of years. He looks an amazing prospect.

Warea Hargreaves averaged 51 minutes a game last year. Again for reference Payne Haas and David Klemmer averaged 64 and 61 minutes respectively.

James Graham, Matt Lodge, Josh Papalii, Fanua Blake, Ryan James and Paul Vaughan (among others) all averaged more minutes per game.

Even Junior Paulo, at 52 minutes per game, put in more minutes on average than Hargreaves.

He’s an unbelievable specimen . Huge , strong but also athletic with good footwork and a hell of an engine . Has played long minutes this season . Real freakish talent who could be absolutely anything . No doubt his parents had a sense of humour but I bet he wasn’t bullied and laughed at in school ...You look  at the broncos with Haas, Pangai , Fifita , Ofahengaue etc and you wonder how they were so average . But as GB found out you need more than a good pack . Brisbane badly need halves to push them on as the pack will give a platform

Who’s gonna be better long term Haas or Fifita?

Good question. And almost impossible to answer as they are both outstanding already.

Fifita can do some amazing things but for value to the team I would say Haas is probably ahead of him.

Both will be in the kangaroos 17 next year which will be great for our fans to see . I’d say they’d be doing all they can to get Staggs back in the fold as well

No, he concedes 1 in the first game and 2 in the next whereas Haas concedes one in the first and none in the next.

Look at their 1 - 9.

As for the original question: Rhino tranquilizer.

You tackle their legs. Not rocket science

Of course . But there’s a bit more deep thinking in this area than generations passed . Tackle their legs yes , and they offload or get a quick play the ball . It’s all wrestle , two or three man tackles and controlling the ruck and it’s speed now . I think these NRL clubs will have thought about it a fair bit

I really hope Fifita defects to Tonga. Apparently Andrew has been on his ear.
