SBW TORONTO

Recommended Posts

SBW/twp second sports story behind Latrell on Sydney's prime-time national news. That's the exposure that this story has for not only Toronto but Super league and rl in the northern hemisphere. The exposure of the kind that super league could only dream about only a few years ago.

Names like SBW playing in the competition may convince Sky to dig a little deeper into its wallet post-2021.

No it won't, SKY have no competition so they don't need to "dig deeper" don't invent stuff to try to justify this nonsense. What do you mean "names like" are you inventing in your head TWP signing more like this?

When your business model is how much chips, beer and pies you sell to away fans

What's the TWP business model?  2017-2019 £10Million Loss set to lose £5M this year and another £5M on SBW total £20Million loss - Argyle is not going to inspire real business people to follow this massive loss making stunt. What he's done here is out of total desperation.

That a club will spend ridiculous amounts of money on a past it player whilst ignoring that that kind of money could be well spent on finding local talent and developing it for the next 1st teamers.

It's easy to give a old star pro a massive pay day, but it's too much like hard work to spend that money on paying Canada RL to employ Junior ARL development officers in Toronto. Desperate stunt to try to please his fellow SL chairmen.  He's hoping SBW will stick thousands on the English clubs gates.

This is blatantly the biggest positive news story in RL in many years.

No it's not. Not positive at all - that money could have gone on Junior development. As it stands it's gone on an old player past his sell by date, who is guaranteed to be given a massive hard time on the pitch by players on far less money, which could be a serious problem. It's a very expensive stunt that does nothing at all for the game.

For me it’s the biggest RL story in the UK since Jonathan Davies signed for Widnes.

Can’t believe that some on here cannot see the bigger picture for Toronto.  They are competing against multiple national and international known sports teams in their city and signing a couple a decent NRL players will mean sod all to the population

What bigger picture. Do you really think the Canadian population have heard of him? Even if they faintly have how will that get them to turn away from Canadian Sports? The only people who may be impressed is the Canadian Rugby Union crowd - but I keep getting told they are insignificant.

You'd also best check Widnes's crowds pre and post the Davies signing. They weren't queing up in their thousands to see the man, despite him being a fantastic talent and a credit to our sport. A mid thirties SBW is no comparison.

There is a TV deal which is fundamental to the game's UK strength, being negotiated over the course of his contract. His signing will almost surely generate PR buzz, wider media coverage, increased crowds and higher ratings. Naturally, that will help increase the size of Superleague's next TV deal

You couldn't make it up, but as usual you do, as do the other usual suspects. The PR buzz is set to last until the man actually performs and if he doesn't put on £5Million performances and add thousands to the gate wherever he goes what then? Argylle and TWP will be toast. So will SBW but very rich toast.....

If we want the best and biggest names over here we're going to have to pay for them. As for Toronto getting a positive financial return, we'll have to see. Its certainly placed them in the conscience of the global "rugby" audience.

What does your first sentence even mean unless it's an admission this is a one off desperate stunt. As for seeing whether TWP recoup £5,000,000 how is that going to happen? Will they move from Lamport to a bigger stadium to accommodate the extra thousands of fans?

Edit - Tommy it's massive news today and gone tomorrow when any newspaper carrying this story will be carrying fish and chips..... Edit Johnoco "these people" is just one extremely rich man who thinks he can buy anything with money. This is a stunt to try to ingratiate himself with SL bosses who don't want him.

It quite obviously means that if we want to arrest the drain of our playing talent to the NRL and to RU and thus to strengthen Super League then our teams are simply going to have to pay higher wages. Unless you were being deliberately obtuse?

Even if this is a "one off desperate stunt", its one of the top 5 news stories around the world from Sydney to Singapore and of course in Canada and over here. As far as one off stunts go, this one seems to be working.

Please....we don’t want one off desperate stunts. We want RL to continue being invisible and die off- but at least it will be an honourable death.

They could have, indeed should have, spent this money refurbishing Odsal stadium so proper RL folk could go watch a game in its last few years.

Who the hell do these people think they are getting involved in a game like RL??

SBW signing is being turned into a negative on here, Facebook, BBC etc Rugby League fans are draining. It honestly puts me off the game sometimes.

It’s embarrassing. Only RL fans could turn the multi-million pound signing of a cross-code, multiple award winning, multiple sport participant into a negative. I genuinely despair about the game’s fans.

IT helps if you take Parky and his legion of doom at face value,a small group of sad old men, lacking ambition, imagination who would rather the game slowly wither away than expand from it's heartlands.

Yep, totally.

However, even these clowns can’t overshadow the good news that this is. Hopefully these luddites can be replaced by people who enjoy the game and don’t just see it as a contest to keep it pure.

On a sitewhich purports to promote rugby league, what is the point of the broken record which goes by the name,The Parksider. 99% dont want him here but the administratorsseem to value his clicks over the good of the game.

Wrong. It's incredibly tedious for us having to keep dealing with threads like this.

Thread locked, as it is no longer about Sonny Bill Williams or Toronto, it is about another forum member, which keeps happening because (a) he keeps posting the same old stuff over and over like a broken record and (b ) everyone else keeps responding to it and making it about him, rather than the original subject of the thread.

I've lost count how many times myself and ckn have posted this advice: if you think someone is a troll, report the trolling and put them on ignore. Never, ever respond to the trolling, because when you do, you have become part of the problem.

Now, to continue the actual discussion, if anyone would like to start a new thread, please go ahead. And if you do, follow the above advice!
