China to help fund World 9s tournament in Samoa

Recommended Posts

With RL increasing its profile in the Pacific, it’s clever to make use of China’s desire to increase its soft power in the region.

They have built the stadium as well and Rugby League is the biggest sport in the PI's and is an international sport as well.

It's not a "world 9s"...it's just a 9s comp

one could say then the recent 9's comp in Sydney wasn't a 'world' comp. Least 2 nations representing about 2 billion people will be present in Samoa apparently. That's a fair chunk of the 'world' 😀

So no past or present NRL or SL players will be involved, so calling it a 'World 9s' kind of confuses it with the actual World 9s that have just taken place. Probably more like the old York 9's or the Cabramatta 9's with a mix of club and international teams?

The quote in the article from the Channel 9 website is a bit optimistic claiming the Samoa tournament "could be a breakthrough for league on the world stage". Still, nice to see a tournament of some description being taken to Samoa.

No harm. However it seems a political decision not sports by China

Not sure about that. It would be great if a regular NRL season game or 2 could to taken to the PI's, and the beauty about that is that it would be a sell out game that the locals would flock too with great enthusiasm. Everybody wins.

Leaving aside the rather odd set-up of this comp, the fact international rugby league is being used as a pawn in a US-China power struggle is quite a thing.

It’s bizarre isn’t it!?

Imagine going back 10 years on this site and predicting this may happen... in addition to predicting Toronto, Tonga’s rise and other things. It’d all be considered unbelievable.

At this rate I dare not even predict what the next ten years may hold.

GB will return and we’ll have a half on the wing again

10 years ago, we'd just seen our last expansion project, Celtic Crusaders, up sticks and move North to Wrexham. It was a rushed project that was only put there just in case their owner got unhappy and gave up on the franchise. Turned out, he did that anyway and we were forced into a move to North Wales.

That's something i would seriously bet against now

I wouldn’t. They are in transition and haven’t wasted any time in blooding new players (unlike another international team I could mention....)
