Elite 1 Takes Off

At last – with all five fixtures fulfilled this weekend. Toulouse reserves ‘the Broncos’ at last started this afternoon after two no-goes because of a virus issue and Avignon last weekend had floods.

Round 3

Limoux 30-8 Villeneuve/Lot

St Esteve 22-18 Avignon

Carcassonne 24-14 Palau

Albi 37-22 Lezignan

Toulouse Broncos 18-28 St Gaudens

Wandered down to Domec last evening to see the Canaris taking on the Catalan minnows of Palau. Wasn’t disappointed too by the fare on offer. Didn’t look too good early doors as the locals plundered two converted tries in the opening ten with Garry Lo just back from PNG and their win over the GB Lions - running amok. It looked like the heavier hosts pack would be just too strong especially as the visitors lacked new signing Jamil Fakir up-front. But they stuck to their guns and worked their socks off. Coach Olivier Elima I reckon doing a fine job down there and now he has former Kangaroo Rodney Howe in support. Well organised and committed. Young full back Castany was excellent for them too getting them down field and two unanswered tries saw them back in contention by the break 12-10. Nip and tuck after the oranges as the unfancied Catalans grew in confidence. Still only18-14 deficit on the hour mark but when Castany was carried off injured late on they lost their way a bit. Still if sides like Palau (2 bonus points so far) can continue to perform like Saturday the competition will only be the better for it. After 3 Rounds then only Limoux undefeated and one team without a win. All the sides have picked up at least one bonus point.

USC and the Pro 16 has its say but the treize with advertising like this will still have its place

Would be good to get Villefranche back-up. They have been there before. Offer expansion into the Aveyron region north of Albi too. They were Elite 2 Champions in 2017 and are presently league leaders. They declined the promotion last time I think because of money issues.

Toulouse Broncos let slip a 18-6 lead yesterday. Young group of players and first run out against a team who ran Albi close the week before. But the big news is they're back home at their old stamping ground at Minimes!

See that they've put up new floodlights at Stade Moulin in Lezignan. Are they only for training purposes (900 lux)?

No we can play with 900 lux

Good news then. Only Limoux now to be sorted in the Aude.

Avignon 32-12 Albi

Carcassonne 18-24 Limoux

St Gaudens 16-30 Villeneuve/Lot

Toulouse Olympique 12-70 Lezignan

Palau 26-30 St Esteve

The Aude derby was a real feisty affair, A blow-up in the openng minutes and ditto to finish it off half  a-dozen yellow cards at least. In between lots to admire. First quarter of an hour nip and tuck with a couple of penalties for the visitors, The Canaris seemed to be too strong done the middle and dominated. Alberola’s side made it tell big style leading into the break with the coach’s son Alexis having a hand in two of the three tries racked-up and converting all three.18-4 and the comps leaders offering nothing ball in hand. What a turn round though. The hosts lost the momentum and shape - not helped by indiscipline too, The Grizzlies clue less early came to life. The stand off Shaun Nona is a catch for them and he came into his own to turn everything round ; four unanswered tries was the out come including one from 17 yr old scrum half Cesar Rouge who toured New Zealand recently with Tricolores U19s. One to look out for.

Elsewhere Avignon behind at the break roared away to a convincing victory over Albi.Villeneuve disappointing last time out at Limoux too strong winning well up in Pyrenees at St Gaudens. Toulouse having a struggle after their virus problems and will need to wait for helping hand when their Championship squad concludes their pre-season training. Again chuffed to see Palau give last years Champions St Esteve a run for their money in the Catalan derby.

I see Lezignan have just put 70pts on against Toulouse! Barnyia or fcl, were any of your imports playing?

Just one Ron  leapai, the others arrive soon, he has a very good game, all of my u 19s that are playing first grade got a try, so happy coach!

Toulouse did have around 10 players that qualify for the juniors in their team though.

Young césar had à great game in first grade for limoux, he played in the halves  against England in the youth test this year,

Go back a decade or more and French half backs were rare in Elite 1. Today is a sea change starting with Fages at St Helens. Gigot and Escare have played these roles too previously. Now behind them the likes of Albert and Mourgue at the Dragons and Robin at Toulouse. Younger again we hear about Rouge from Limoux making his Elite debut this past weekend. Another teenager Bravo from Carpentras was announced at both Catalans and Toulouse close season but seems to have stayed up in Provence for the time being.

The reports coming out of St Esteve talk of the impression being made by the young forwards there. Week after week now a trio of Le Cam, Cozza and Salabiou are raising their games

I see Kuni Minga, former Toulouse winger, is back in Elite 1 with St Gaudens, after a spell in the dark side.................didn't expect to see that. Not sure how he did over the last couple of seasons

He signed there for 2 seasons, only managed 1 game for the topside and they paid him out & let him go.
