ORLFC Heritage Website

I went to the ORLFC exhibition on Saturday and it was well worth the visit. Whilst I was there I was shown the new Heritage website that has been produced by David Naylor and Michael Turner.

The work that has gone into the website is phenomenal. Every game that ORLFC has ever played with full lists of players in many cases with photographs and much, much more information about our great club. Without making a mistake with the address could either David or Michael post it on this site.

This site is a MUST for all Oldham supporters.

Just had a quick look (trust me I could spend hours on the site!) via a Google search, I guess this is the web address https://orl-heritagetrust.org.uk

What an amazing history of our club, truly fantastic. Thankyou to everyone involved with the trust, especially Michael Turner whose knowledge and enthusiasm is incredible. Deserves  massive credit and recognition for this comprehensive and fascinating compilation of stats , photos, documents and miscellany and for the herculean effort put in to provide us with this record of Oldham RLFC through the years.

Dave N does wonders with the tech side of things and again has excelled with the site. Thanks Dave!

As Mr Royales says it definately is a must for anyone with an interest in Oldham RLFC and RL generally. Awesome stuff guys.

Thank you.

I went on Saturday, with the pictures of my family on show I can honestly say I was extremely proud.

The wife also pointed out that the family looks certainly passed down the line to me. The way she said it not in a good way.

Massive thumbs up

I built the site using data and assets provided by Michael Turner and the Oldham Rugby League Heritage Trust.  I was working on the thing throughout 2019 and in fact I'm still working on it.  I think I'll be working on it for a considerable time!

It has indeed been a herculean task by all involved but if we've produced something of interest to Oldham RL fans, that's enough for me.

One of the things that I've got to work on is video footage.  Oh lordy, there's a lot of video!

Here's one.  We're going to share this type of video on the anniversary of games etc.  Either in the week they happened or if there's a video available, on the same day.

Oldham v Barrow, December 10, 1966.

Oldham 10 Barrow 4

Oldham Team: 1. Brian Curry, 2. Mike Elliott, 3. Peter Holroyd, 4. John Donovan, 5. Joe Collins, 6. Tommy Warburton, 7. Tom Canning, 8. Charlie Bott, 9. Kevin Taylor, 10. Ken Wilson, 11. Peter Smethurst, 12. Robert Irving, 13. Geoff Fletcher, 14. Stan Mcleod, 15. David Parker

Thank you all for a great response so far!

There is loads more stuff to go on the site yet and it will be evolving as we go along.

Current;y some of the images are labeled up wrong and we will be sorting this.

For example, we are currently digitizing hundreds of match reports, the Wednesdays Chron reviews and articles, related features from other newspapers and magazines etc.

All these will be in searchable PDF's so you can put in say, Terry Flanagan 1982 as a search and it should bring up all related stuff.

These are all generally from original newspapers etc rather than the microfilm archives in the Local Interest Centre.

I am currently working on some 1919 Green Finals as an example.

There was a lot of research papers from when we produced some of the old books and we hope to get this stuff on eventually as well.

There are 137 films,  b & w footage, regarding Oldham in general,  and Oldham RLFC matches  which i found a few years back, held by The North West Film Archive , cant remember how i found it originally but one film was of busses climbing up Ripponden Road prior to a match in the 1950's, also a match against the Aussies inn 1921, i watched it on line but just checked and cant see how i did it unless they have changed it now ???

The 1921 film was passed to me in 2007 at the Rugby Oldham Celebration dinner.

The lady who gave it to me explained it was old Nitrate film and what was in it. Her grandfather was the projectionist and manager at various cinemas in Oldham. She had found it in the family's attic.

His passion was film making and he used to film the likes of Oldham Rugby and Athletic at matched and training. Many of these got shown at the intermission during the films.

Whilst researching Watersheddings Memories we found an advert for the Coliseum Theatre from 1931 which referred to these.

Sadly, the only one that seems to have survived is this match!

We had to have restored at the National Film archive specialist unit in London and as part of the deal it was then incorporated into their archive.

For those who have been to some of the Rugby Oldham dinners they have used some of this footage in films we made for them.

The story behind the 1950's film you mention, is this was original part of the whole series of Standard 8 film that was donated many years ago and was sent to Micron Video in Wigan for transfer to VHS (that is how long ago this was). Sadly, the conversion was not the best job. They did it by videoing the imaging that was being projected onto a screen. Unfortunately, despite many conversations and searches, Micron lost the original films.

The buses going to match in the snowy conditions are fascinating though. On the same footage are a queue of coaches from the away fans packed the length of Wales Street.

All the films & videos, in the collection (500+ matches) have recently been digitized by a specialist company in the midlands and upgraded to HD where possible.

All this was made possible by large donation from a benefactor and is named after them. It is the FRANK & EDITH TAYLOR MOVING IMAGE ARCHIVE

Went onto the website last night, it's fantastic. I could've spent ours looking at the photo's, the stats and everything else. Many thanks to all concerned. It choked me a bit with all the pictures of Sheddings.

Thank you for your kind comments - the website is an on going project.

As an example, as well as all the match reports being attached to the game page, we will be adding Chronicle news articles from the week leading up to the match.

We will also be putting on all of Roger old Weekly Round Ups that used to go in  the Chron on a Wednesday,

There is other stuff as well. One of the best features I have come across among some old scrapbooks is a weekly series on articles in the 1966 Summer Pink newspaper headed "Everything But Wembley". Each of the players from the 1950's super team were interviewed with their reminiscences - fascinating stuff!

If anyone has any photos or articles from the past that you think we may not have, feel free to get in touch! We will return that after they have been scanned.

No probs, we're fortunate to have people like yourselves with the indepth knowledge of all things roughyeds. I'm going to enjoy the website, looking at the past and loving looking at the pictures. I live near and know Adrian Alexander (Alex) and it was nice to see him in his playing days as he was a little before my time. Once again many thanks to the individuals who have put together this fantastic website, it really is a great asset to ensure the past isn't forgotten.
