Hull FC Over Salary Cap

Its pretty obvious that this guy is just not too bright sometimes although I like the squad he has put together....WOW, 25 MARQUEES ON ONLY ONE TEAM!

I wish I was like him, be nice to be that dumb and be so wealthy.

Given how teams such as Wire and Leeds seem to sign plenty of players that must command high salaries with no apparent salary cap issues, I can't help but wonder if he's dangling a hook and waiting for a bite.

While no fan of the salary cap it shouldn't be applied until the team's roster is finalised before the first regular season game. What difference does it make if you're over the cap when you're not playing games that count?

Again, they're not over the cap allowance. He's saying that he would be that much over without the exemptions he was discussing.

Like a Catholic Priest holding out the Collection Basket.

Apparently they need to solidify the Heartlands before they expand. Judging by this map it seems more and more like a ghetto.

Looks even worse if you were to include the RFL & RFU Championship.  Expansion needs to happen and it needs to happen ASAP for the sake of the sport.

It will be an interesting game when they come here and I'm looking forward to seeing them play 'in the flesh' for once.  This bellyaching about a short turnaround and accommodations better stop though..no one is stopping them from upgrading or doing their own booking if they don't like it.  If it was good enough for the lads from Workington Town it certainly is good enough for Hull.

I think it will be a close game but we will win by 5 points with Sonny Bill putting the dagger to them.

Most of them would be better off working on building sites if they got paid any less than they do now. If we want to be a tin pot sport then paying peanuts and giving one year contracts is the way to go.

Simply paying them more doesn't make them better players, in the same way that you (and I) think that RL is the greatest game doesn't make it so......

I’m obviously not suggesting paying them more makes them better. However being able to pay more would keep better players in SL and enable SL to attract better players from elsewhere (incl Union). Otherwise we are just left with people not good enough to play in the NRL.

You say a ghetto but the population of that strip between Hull and Merseyside is pretty big, certainly bigger than the population inbetween Worcester and Exeter which encompasses 5 of the clubs on your map. Also your map is old and Newcastle aren’t on it any more so other than Sale their top flight has a small footprint too. Basically both codes are utterly dwarfed by football.

The worst part of the salary cap has indeed been the glass ceiling imposed on the standard a team , and hence the competition , can reach.

Unfortunately , after 20 years of very substantial, additional, guaranteed income , we still only have three or four clubs capable of spending more than their allocated money. Any forthcoming reduction in the TV contract will see clubs struggle to spend even up to the cap as it stands. A complete scrapping of the cap , whilst welcomed by many spectators and viewers , would result in a polarised competition and therefore it is unlikely enough clubs would vote in favour.

Gary Prohm went to the Roosters (Eastern Suburbs as was) from Hull KR. Hard to believe Hull KR's overseas quota once consisted of Prohm , Mark Broadhurst, Gordon Smith all Kiwi internationals, and Aussie internationals Gavin Miller (only dual Man of Steel, Dally M winner prior to Barba, and World Cup winner) and John Dorahy.  They also fielded numerous GB internationals , including several captains , at the same time. Would be absolutely impossible under the current system.

the salary cap is dumbing down the competition

the big clubs are being dragged down to the level of the poor clubs

the marquee player allowance has helped, but english clubs havent really used it properly.  SBW is a true marquee.  maybe warrington with widdop.

the cap should be higher, at least to the level of the middle clubs, not the poorest clubs

this would have the added benefit of weeding out the weaker clubs who add nothing to super league.

Sounds like a huge blowhard tbh.  You wanted TWP to pay for your flights so you can take what we give you.  ???

The Super League Chairmen inspire so much confidence in this sport.

yeh i could understand league one and champsionship clubs having a whinge ?

but the boss of Hull FC ? thats a worry.  and toronto forgo a large TV payment this time in super league, unlike what the championship clubs get

you get a bit worried when even the supposedly big clubs have such a poor view towards expansion

yeh they are pretending to be from canada

even whilst still managing to attend toronto home games.

it was a fair point he posted.

league doesnt have to expand, it can stay as it is a minor sport with falling revenues and struggling to stay relevant in the modern world

I'm as Canadian as they come buds.  From the Coreurs de bois vintage.

I want TWP and League to spread far and wide, it won't unless League supports expansion and develops new markets.

Completely inappropriate comment from a club owner in the same league.

he did say some good things.  maybe when they visit over there and he meets argyle and experiences the beer garden first hand he will change his mind.

it looks an amazing experience.

he might even learn a few things he could try at his own home games to improve the fan experience.

you guys make it event.  even nrl clubs just assume because the sport is a good one they dont have to try very hard on the fan day experience.

the fan day experience in the nrl is mostly poor

food and drink are very expensive.  long food queues.  and stadia that are 80 percent empty when its at the big ones.

Thought full time rugby league clubs could afford it themselves

Looking at the map there is certainly an argument York, Newcastle and Sheffield should be given extra help as expansion clubs. I’m taking extra development officers, extra funding to run an academy.

3 big cities close to the heartlands, it’d be great if they were able to become successful Super League clubs.

They should all.be in super league

Although Sheffield are a long way off with their ground

Newcastle and York could be there now

Nice idea but who are you proposing would pay for it. And it would be unfair on teams in other areas (Cumbria for example).
