Carcassonne v Albi

Really enjoyed the three matches I've seen so far. All competitive. Good to see they've got U19s back up into the Elite too. Their two antipodeans Lo and Pellow each grabed a hatrick off tries at St Esteve last weekend. Lezignans overseas lads late arrivals contre to Limoux who had theirs pre-season. The Aude is part of our version of the M62 corridor between Toulouse and Perpignan

After their impressive effort winning at St Esteve last weekend the Canaris fell short yet again 12-15 to the Tarn side Albi. 3 defeats at home already surprising from a side who reached both finals in 2019. Albi are a solid out-fit with ambitions to progress and challenge the Catalan and Aude strangle hold. Their pack shone in the heavy conditions. Having USCs Pro 16 game the night before didn’t help.

Carcassonne have a problem giving away far too many penalties presently and again picked up two yellow cards. Maybe getting skipper Bastien Escamilla back from injury will sort things out. Leigh prop Emmit was suspended and was missing – as was PNG's wing Lo with a leg injury. 0-7 at the break as the visitors dominated completely.

The Canaris came out fighting after the break and by the hour mark led 12-9 with just a penalty from 18 yr old stand off hopefull Fabre in reply. It looked likely that the hosts would hold on as the rain arrived and made conditions even worse. Last week in Perpignan on a dry track Carcassonne came from behind against the Baby Dracs with Lo and new Australian full back Pellow each grabbing a hat trick of tries. A week later the former Illawarra player dropped an up & under five metres out late on and Albi made it tell with a winning score next to the posts 12-15.

Elsewhere 2018 winners Avignon hopeless last term are back on track winning again at home against Villeneuve/Lot 34-20. Big story of the weekend though Limoux losing their undefeated record going down against the young St Esteve side 26-18 with teenage full back Brochon grabbing a brace of tries and five goals.

The difference at Domec – two converted tries a piece – was 18 yr old stand off Baptiste Fabre with two conversions , a penalty and drop goal to get his Albi side across the line. He is a well built half back and there’s talk that Leeds having been interested. Next month he and the other outstanding half back who have broken through this year – Limoux’s 17 yr old Cesar Rouge who toured New Zealand with the French U19s in October - are heading to Melbourne for a weeks training camp at the Storm. The Catalan Laurent Garnier based in Australia has facilitated this opportunity.

The kick off yesterday for the St-Gaudens/Lezignan game was given by Carole Delga, the President of the Occitanie Region which encompasses Toulouse and Montpellier and has a population of nearly 6 million. It was the second time this year that she has been involved with the game. She was received by Bernard Guasch at Stade Gilbert Brutus leading up to the Barcelona game at the Camp Nou. The Region support the Dragons spreading their 'marque' overseas - Spain in 2019 and Canada in 2020.The 'Sud de France' on the Dragons jerseys relates to the Regions promotion of its food and wines.
