What A Difference A Decade Makes

As we hurtle into a brand new decade (pedantry excepting) of hope and expectation it is salutary to reflect upon where we found ourselves at the beginning of the last one, in season 2010. We had come off the back of a compellingly successful year in 2009 led by the mastercoach, Warren Jowitt, and entered the Championship with high expectations of continued success. Losing our first 12 league games in succession dampened expectations a touch and left us facing the prospect of a rapid return to the lower league. However, a run of six victories in the last eight games, including walloping our friends across the valley, saved our bacon and gained Warren a nomination for Championship coach of the season. With the benefit of bonus points we actually avoided the drop by 10 points, waving farewell to Keighley, who have yet to return, and Whitehaven. We even had expectations of pushing into the playoffs in 2011 - whatever happened to that?

Our top try scorer was Bryn Powell with 12 whilst goalkicking was split between Patch Walker and Dominic Brambani. Key players, in terms of league appearances, were:

P Walker 20

B Powell 20

D Brambani 19

S Turner 18

J Lockwood 17(3)

L Blake 14(5)

A Bostock 14

K Hirst 15(3)

A Robinson 4(12)

L Stenchion 4(14)

with a supporting cast of another 27 players.

Our average attendance was 1145.

Across the valley our dear neighbours won a second-rate cup and have never stopped banging on about it since. Amongst their stalwarts were Lee Greenwood (where is he now?), Byron Smith, Jason Walton and one Gareth Moore, joint Young Player of the Year.

Plus ca change.......................?

Sport, amongst other things, is a dream-world offering escape from harsh reality and the disturbing prospect of change.

Nice one BSJ, but as you suggested (in parentheses), this is where I nip in and ruffle some feathers by stating that the next decade does not begin until 2021!

You won't ruffle mine at all CF but, whilst centuries do have "official" starting years I don't believe that the same applies to decades. (e.g. 2005-2014 is a decade.)

Well, that didn't take long for a jolly NY thread to get petulant, did it?
