Graham Greaves Posted January 3, 2020 Share Posted January 3, 2020 The season is almost upon us . We have 1 fit Half back. We have lost 3 centres and signed none. Dale Morton is a winger not a centre. Tomlinson is a forward. We have no cover in our back division at all. In the boxing day game our starting pack looked more than capable the players recruited in the forwards will get better. What I am getting at is why has our recruitment in the backs been ordinary. I do not know the coaches plans but if we start the season with the current squad we are asking for trouble. This division is a strong one we desperately need to improve on our previous season. I'm not sure on the keenan fascination he's an average forward squad player at best. The second row area and 6/7 look very fragile 'Shaw cross juniors, Birkenshaw, Mirfield, Heckmondwike Panthers, Stainland Stags and then the Heavy woolen donkeys... Second row playing centre. phildog Posted January 4, 2020 Share Posted January 4, 2020 The starting pack v Rams was workmanlike but neither prop is the busting type that I have being going on about, but is that a defensive, tackling plus? We don't want to be getting into the 'so and so can cover' thing either, horses for courses, 2nd row and centre are completely different mindsets, specialist over trier anytime. Tomlinson has had a rough ride here, never been sure where he fits in, been thrown in the wing, no no, had too many 2nd rowers for him to stake a claim there, plays centre for Jamaica, solid, good tackler but not got the pace to get away and feed a winger, but deserves a place somewhere. Wingers, 2 great fans' favourites but favourites aren't bound to be the best, we at least need a fit Walker back with his pace. Halves are a problem now that we only have one!! We have to get into the loan or DR game for a 2nd/3rd choice SL man. Agree that recruitment wasn't red hot but for our position probably expectedly adequate, don't think any of our near-competitors have done any better. What I am hoping for is a great improvement in Bulldog spirit and commitment. Sure there's another 'name' signing in the pipeline somewhere.... We could have access to half the Hull first team squad and still be battling relegation. It also seems that Leeds are loaning Bradford few players to "help them out". Looks like a last-minute mad scramble for players may ensue. You do, however, have a couple of triallists turning out for you this coming weekend. It's very admirable, I'm not a fan of it either and probably like most CH fans, I would prefer it was not used at all, but I just cannot see any way of competing with teams that use it, if we take the moral high ground. I'm still not convinced, which is the lesser of two evils. Take the moral high ground and likely face oblivion and likely battle against relegation, or succumb like the other teams around us, and maybe falsely improve our league position by using players from another club? TBH there is no 'moral high ground' any more in Championship RL. Unless a Club has big money backing and Directors who are prepared to take risk for reward, DR is a necessary survival option, based on a Club's skill in negotiating, implementing, and developing the right DR contract. You may be correct, although I've a feeling Barrow took the moral high ground last season by not using DR and suffered the consequences. However, I could be wrong.
