Rugby League in France “has to get its act together”

Recommended Posts

I can't ever see Toulose winning promotion Into sl.  they seem like a side that will always bottle it.

Unless they get parachuted in and have immunity from relegation les Catalans will be the only French super league club

Unless they get relegated then it will.be none

It obviously would. You are suggesting creating an international competition seeing that become wildly successful, then scrapping it and  starting again with a new national competition.

If an international competition is wildly successful, why would we ever want to go back to national competitions?

It's fine, it would only be the French leaving, by that point we would have the Canadians, Americans and at least the Serbs involved. We will still have an internation competition, just no French!

I think the only way to get a French professional domestic league is to grow 4 or so clubs in the British system to the point that they can breakaway and form the basis of their own league.

In my opinion it will just make those clubs reliant on the British system

If BeIN sport said “Hey, let’s make a league with Catalans, Toulouse, Carcassone, Avignon, London, Newcastle, Belgrade, Valencia, Ottawa, NY, Manchester” would they get enough subscribers?

What if it was Amazon or Sportsflick?

Anyone willing to suggest some numbers?

Point is, would it be viable?

No, sports cannot just be plonked in virgin area's and be expected to work out, TWP have done exceptionally well but their reliance is on other places producing player's for them. You mention 11 teams for your League supposedly they would have to recruit player's from existing clubs if so what will happen to those clubs, do you expect them to keep going with a much reduced standard of RL football because the best players will be populating your new League, will existing supporters still go along to watch clubs in a reduced quality League?

I.think top.down expansion can work If it has enough money behind it.  E.g. wolfpack

If we had more argyles backing other random cities they could work too

Forget about where the players come from for a minute, the question is would there be enough subscribers to fund the teams.

At £5 per month, that’s £60 per year.

If you need at least £500k per team, say 10 teams is £5M.

That’s 83,000 subscribers.

So if that’s too many, lower the number of teams initially or the central funds.

8 teams @ £250k central funds = £2M

So you need 33,000 subscribers.

Each team would need to get 4,100 subscribers without considering neutral fans.

I guess in a way, this is the same question being put towards the RFL championship for beyond 2021. Can they attract a broadcast deal.
