I wish I could apply my nouse to this thread, but as my phone has died a stupid death, and my phone provider will not upgrade my phone, I have had to buy a £30 phone, because an employer needs me to have a phone. Due to my negative credit rating I can't do anything else.

You can get a fairly decent Chinese smartphone for £50 or so. What did you get?

I am an an android user, never liked Apple of Samsung as overall companies.

Currently got a Motorola that I have had for about 3 years? It cost me around £130 brand new, and is still going now, does everything that I could want from it, but it is a bit slow.

I just can't really ever justify spending more than a £1k on a phone.

Same here; I'm on my second Motorola, an E4. Great phones for the money. The only thing that isn't comparable with a top of the range phone is the camera, but I've got a couple of proper cameras for when I need to take proper high quality photos so for me it's no big issue. It runs all the apps I use, both for business and socially with ease. I keep on top of the slowness by regularly flushing ###### from it using CCleaner, that way speed is fine for me.

My auntie is 77 and her daughter thought it would be a really good idea to get her a super duper smart phone for Christmas ... they’ve hardly spoken since and auntie refuses to take it out the box

My issue with apple is their exploitation of users. Nearly all android phones have the shame charger and apple are fitting this, probably because they make so much money on ear buds, chargers etc

Apple could be forced to change this:

My gran got an iPad at 78, she was banned from AOL chat groups for abusing Germans on their over 75 year olds’ chat groups. 😄

She loved it and was using it heavily until a few weeks before her death. She couldn’t get the hang of FaceTime on it though and couldn’t get why it didn’t work with landline numbers.

I remember picking up an Alcatel about 10 years ago when my phone at the time broke. I think it was about £30 as well.

I actually quite enjoyed using it, and used it for longer than I was originally expecting when it was bought!

My gran's phone died once (just a £20 thing) and so I bought her the exact same model as a replacement. I set it up for her and showed her how to ring people cos that's literally all she needed a phone for and even wrote a list of basic instructions out as to how to access her phonebook and what have you. She rung me up a couple hours later on the landline saying she hated it and didn't understand how it worked and she was going to stamp on it. I went round to find out what the problem was. Turned out she had got the instruction manual out despite me telling her not to and had read it had a radio (her last phone had one, she just didn't know that) so insisted it was a different phone to her last one and basically didn't even want to try to use it as a result. She said she couldn't access the phone book but what it was was on her previous phone she used the recently called numbers as the phone book so cos this was new and didn't have recently called numbers she didn't think the numbers were on there. I spent all afternoon ringing all the relatives up, quickly explaining to them what was going on and hanging up on them. Used up most of her credit......

Update : auntie is on the verge of throwing said phone out of the window as her daughter won’t stop ringing on it and auntie refuses to answer it so the ringing is driving her mental . All she says to me is ‘ I hate it ... I hate it ... “ . Has a phone ever driven anyone clinically mad or led to criminal damage ??

Why doesn't she just turn it off ?

I have said that . It would probably involve touching it but I think it’s being done and hopefully removed to a secure location and world harmony can be restored .

I'm actually getting used to it, despite it being so small that when I make calls on it, my chubby fingers and cheeks are making it do other things, so I am having to alter my angle of call.

I owned an iPod in about 2004 but that's the only Apple product I've used. To me, it's quite a simple choice to use Android. It's an OS developed by the company that effectively organises and manages the internet. You can then use this software on hardware developed by companies that specialise just in developing the hardware. It's a no-brainer really. Software from a software specialist working on hardware from a hardware specialist.

In contrast, Apple spends far more of their revenue on marketing than research and development and that lack of investment has left their products behind, from a technological perspective, for at least the last 10 years now. For example, I remember when Apple spent $billions on advertising their 'new' FaceTime feature some years ago and Android users just chuckled as the same technology had already been freely available on Android-enabled handsets for years without any fanfare.

It's difficult to remember the last genuinely new technology that Apple brought to market (though I'm sure one of their fans will put this right!)
