Just did a run for bread (forgot yesterday) and I passed a public park.

About 20-ish families of parents and children in some sort of semi-organised event having fun. Not a single mask in sight and zero social distancing.

That just made me sad as it highlighted why we’re nowhere near getting rid of this thing as a disease.

Thing is though, unless they are touching each other's stuff like plates and the like they should be ok shouldn't they?  I mean there is a small risk outdoors according to the scientists but unless there is some influence of weather in this, given we saw no rise in cases following the May bank holiday packed beaches (more packed than lately because Scotland and Wales weren't open and foreign travel anywhere was on hold at that point) then the chances of there being an impact from a family event in the outdoors surely is small?

In amongst the negativity - nice to see one of my local pubs acting responsibly.

One of there chefs has come into contact with someone who has tested positively, pub shut until all staff, not just him have been tested, no messing about, with assurance that if anyone tests positive not only will they go through official channels and contact customers but also put the message out on social media for all to see.

A friend who works for DfE is now on a rota for going into the office. As you say, it couldn't cope with all staff in anyway beforehand and can now cope with about 20%, all of whom, as it is central London, will be expected to use the tube to get there.

Working from home, given that his team can, just makes more sense now and probably in the long run.

We moved into our current location 12 years ago with 80% desking, we have further reduced this in the last 2 years, think we are at 60%.

The article was in the Mail, this is nothing more than govt propaganda. The Tories have an agenda against the judiciary and Civil servants

By contrast, the Gerard Arms here in St Helens had a member of staff test positive during the week and they've opened again tonight.  Council reckon they can't do anything about it.  I'm not convinced given that it is a health and safety matter but should the rest of the staff be infected by the Covid positive member of staff then nobody will know until that infection has been spread around the place.  Totally irresponsible.

A friend of mine was there. She self isolated at start of week when she heard expecting to have to have a test, but was told later By track and trace that she didn’t need to as she was mainly outside. I would have thought a test would have been the best precaution. I’m sure there was another pub highlighted later as it was where the Garrard Arms staff went to socialise. Can’t remember which one though

Not that easy to get a test though

Our son came back from Uni as he has nowhere to live in August (old rental lease ended end of July the next one starts Sep 1st), having heard about "everyone who wants one can have a test" we  suggested as he has been working in a pub in a higher prevalence town and his sister has a job in a local pub here that he got a test. just to be safe He said he couldn't so I rang (as i didnt believe him)

Was told as he had no actual symptoms he couldnt be tested, unless someone from the pub tested +ve and track and trace told him to  (and therefore reg'd his name)

Person on the hotline was not happy with the number of calls he was getting form people wanting a test but not meeting the VERY strict criteria to get one

It's been pretty clear since capacity was ramped up (and is clearly stated on the gov/NHS booking website) that you have to either have symptoms (self book a test) or be referred by your employer (key workers) to get a test appointment.

Part of the problem is that only half quotes get reported - the 'anybody can have a test' misses off the bit 'who has symptoms'. The whole thing was said when first announced during the daily briefings.

just seemed to us that given his job and moving to a lower risk area, if there really are 200k tests a day being done that it would make sense for him to be tested as if he was an asymptomatic infection and passed it to daughter that would be a massive infection event with her serving in a bar and my parents coming forma 3rd area to visit that this weekend for younger daughters 14th Bday

mmm My reading of the Local Authority powers under Health Protection (Coronavirus) is that they have the power to direct a business to close if they regard its a threat to health.

You have to be a Upper tier or Unitary Local Authority (if single tier area).

St Helens is an Upper Tier Authority when you check the Covid cases reports.

I assume the authority don't see it as a threat or maybe its the local council being a part of St Helens Upper Tier are the ones saying they don't have the power.

Also other members of staff would be close contacts and hence isolating.  Of course the staff member that tested positive may not have given the other staff details. Never-the-less those staff would know and isolate without being told.

I guess if people are daft enough to go to that Pub given they haven't closed then you don;t hit the Pub in its pockets. Local action as in not going always an alternative.

I use to live in St Helens when we first married, have friends their plus as a result our family are split between Saints or Leeds supporters and hence my "nosy" interest

Yeah, if she was outside then she wouldn't need to as scientists say outside is minimal risk and the staff member wouldn't be spreading it around outdoors in the same way she would be doing indoors.  My beef is that all staff should have isolated for 14 days, as per everyone else, because they would be considered close contacts with the staff member who is positive.  But the pub hasn't done that and the Council hasn't enforced it.  But then we are talking about St Helens Council here and they're pants no matter what the issue.

That was my understanding too.  But St Helens Council will get out of doing anything if they can, and clearly they have done so!

I agree about the local action.  The story featured in the local press, although that paper is no longer free to residents and so the story will probably not have the coverage it had pre pandemic.  Hopefully though people will avoid the pub and force it into behaving more responsibly.

You escaped a miserable existence by leaving St Helens!  It's terrible.  I only stay here because of an aged parent.  Someone in my family needs to be local to watch out for them and that would be me.  Given half the chance I would live somewhere else.

Outside isn't minimal risk in every situation. Distancing is still important. From the ECDC report on Covid-19 transmission of 16th July:

However, outdoor events have also been implicated in the spread of COVID-19, typically those associated with crowding such as carnival celebrations and football matches suggesting a risk of transmission linked to crowding even at outdoor events.

use to like musing around the town centre, but I'm going back 40+ years. A couple of years back went to the Town Centre I was a little shocked.

I still visit friends, and of course go the Saints ground most seasons when Leeds play - missus is a keen Leeds fan. We only go to friends and then onto the game. Don't see much except driving around the ground and down past Sutton Manor to visit family in Huyton & Liverpool.  So don't see much of it.

Miss all T little chippies that use T exist. Always remember taking T plates into T chippie,  plate taken and warmed, fish&chips put straight on T plate, then wrapped... Down by T Junction station.

Highlight use to be getting fish and chips when we visited back in T day.... none exist anymore.

St Helens was a very, very different place back then!  It was busy and safe and litter free and you'd only see the odd drunk. It's a terrible place now.  We've lost four more shops during lock down and gained about ten more druggies.  The place needs blowing up and rebuilding.

I have had a letter from the Office for National Statistics inviting me to be interviewed for a Covid Study:

How do I take part?

Call IQVIA on 0800 085 6807. If you are unable to use the telephone, you can email iqvia.covid19survey@nhs.net

Register to take part and make a home appointment at your convenience.

A study worker will arrive at your home to complete the study.

he information you give us is protected by law and is treated as confidential.

How long will it take?

The first appointment will take 15 to 30 minutes per person.

 What happens next?

If you are interested, we would like everyone in the household to repeat this study over either a month or 12 months - but you do not have to do this if you don't want to. If you are interested, this will involve:

A visit once a week from a study worker to collect a nose and

throat swab. This will happen for 4 weeks in a row, so 5 visits in total.

A visit once a month after this for 12 months in a row to collect a nose and throat swab.

As a thank you, anyone in your household who takes part will receive

a voucher for each visit (f30 for the first visit, £25 for each further visit).

Under Scrutiny by the Right-On Thought Police

Believe it if you want (from BBC Live)

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia has registered the world's first vaccine for coronavirus.

Despite earlier scepticism from health experts and a warning from the World Health Organization to follow established protocols, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko declared that the vaccine was "proven to be highly effective and safe" and Mr Putin said it had "passed all the required checks".

The minister added that trials of the vaccine would continue, involving thousands of people.

Mr Putin said one of his daughters had used the vaccine, and that she was fine after having had an increase in temperature.

BBC Live:

New Zealand has detected its first locally-transmitted coronavirus cases in more than 100 days.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said four people tested positive from the same household. The source of the infections is not yet known.

Auckland will go into a "level 3" lockdown for a few days while the cases are investigated, she said.
