Graham
Canberra Raiders forward John Bateman has had minor shoulder surgery to fix an ongoing shoulder problem. The Raiders revealed on their website that surgery was opted for after the Englishman had an extended representative season with the Lions. The club is hoping that surgery will fix the issue without any prolonged effects. There is currently no timetable for the 26-year old’s return, with an assessment to be made closer to the season. Bateman joins Hudson Young on the sidelines, who is suspended for a further five matches from his 2019 suspension. Graham
They are Raiders halfbacks with the same surname but one is likely to play the majority of first-grade games for Ricky Stuart's side this year – George Williams. The other – Sam Williams – is certain to get on the field as well, but has no idea how many times that will happen. He played 10 games in 2019 as back-up for halves Aidan Sezer and Jack Wighton. Graham
When Cronulla approached Raiders among other clubs asking if they wanted Josh Dugan they have said no thanks. We know Sharks want to offload Dugan after the breakdown in their relationship with him. Canberra were always unlikely to want the bloke seeing as how they got shut of him in the past when he skipped training to go boozing. Graham
Canberra Raiders look set to retain the services of Jarrod Croker and Nick Cotric just a week after locking down Jack Wighton. According to The Daily Telegraph, the duo are likely to sign on for a combined $4.5 million with that total bumping up to $7.7 million when including the deal reached with Wighton last week. Croker is seeking a four-year deal, with the final year set to be incentive-based. Cotric however hasn’t decided on the length of the deal he is seeking whether it be two, three or four years. Croker is said to be priced at around $600,000 a year while Cotric is just below on $500,000. According to Paul Sutton, Croker’s manager, a deal between the two parties is imminent. Graham
As a comment on an article about these injuries online, one fan tartly put it this way: "Bad enough for a team to come out of a Mickey Mouse tournament with 1 injury but 3 is a killer." Graham
As we know things have been looking up for Raiders on the field. Then there's... ● Canberra’s crowds have increased by a staggering 6609 fans a game since the Viking Clap started four years ago; ● Attendances for Canberra’s cross-town rugby union rivals the Brumbies have plummeted; ● Potential commercial partners are prepared to outlay $50,000 to sponsor the Viking horn; ● NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance, who fought the recent bushfires in his Bega electorate, has been invited to blow the Viking horn at this year’s round-one home game against Gold Coast on March 13. “It (Viking Clap) has definitely increased the interest we now get from sponsors because it is something unique,” Raiders chief executive Don Furner said. “I haven’t seen anything like it in any other code in Australian sport. “Years ago we had to work the phones to get sponsors, so it’s nice to know the calls are now going the other way. “The Viking clap isn’t the only reason why they sponsor us but it may have piqued their interest and then they pick up the phone and tell us they like what we’re doing.” Canberra’s average crowd the year before the Viking Clap was introduced was 9629. When the clap arrived in 2016, that average surged to 13,806. The average last season had jumped to a stellar 16,238. Graham
Jarrod Croker could sign a two-year extension, with an option for a third, as early as Monday. It could take the Raiders co-captain into an astonishing 15th season with the Green Machine and make him the most-capped Raider of all time. He's already the club's all-time leading point scorer and try scorer, and he's also in the mix to be the NRL all-time leading point-scorer by the time he hangs up his kicking tee. But it might not be the last boost for Canberra before the 2020 season starts, with Nick Cotric also closing in on a three-year deal.
