More weather disruption this weekend likely..fixture pile up nightmare

Recommended Posts

With another  horrendous forecast for the weekend it seems likely that there will be lots of fixtures cancelled again. Some clubs (quite a few) will have only have played 1 game after 3 weeks of the season. This will mean playing games midweek twice. Fatigue, injury etc. Can this be fair? Should the league step in to help avoid giving big advantages to clubs who have been lucky enough to have not been affected?

This is part of the issue with not expanding, if weather impacts even just one part of the country it can cause pileup. If we had more Canadian, French, Spanish and southern English/Welsh sides the sport wouldn't be at such risk from some bad winds. Should the 'heartland' clubs have to pay a bond to insure against the risk of fixture pileup?

There will be “blank” weekends throughout the year for when teams get knocked out of the Challenge Cup and have free weekends.

You also have Easter Monday free, which isn’t a joke suggestion. I hated the Easter Monday game but there was a rumour that Saints’ rearranged game with Catalans because of the Sydney Roosters WCC game will be played on Easter Monday.

Not as straight forward as it sounds. Relies on both teams being available and with two games to rearrange this wont be easy. Also Easter Monday not viable for some teams either. Featherstone and Toulouse for example play Easter Friday then Wednesday the next week.

Catalans play Toronto in Perpignan on Easter Saturday, so its unlikely they'd want to play a game in St Helens 2 days later.

There’s a bank holiday in May and August as well, it’s not ideal but Rugby League isn’t and the organisation of fixtures has never been our strong point.

Not sure there’s a good time for them to travel over, unless both go out of the Cup and there’s a blank weekend free. It looks likely that there will have to be some flexibility in the organisation of the game.

This isn’t a fixture pile up

When I was a lad clubs had to play 27 matches in 5 days and the players worked full time

Seriously we are miles from having any issues. These postponements are in the first not last weeks of the season so plenty of flexibility to rearrange games

International travel will cause some problems for rescheduling imo.

Can't play midweek of you're supposed to travel to Toronto

Can't do (shouldn't?) Wednesday/Thursday if you gotta go to France for Saturday/sunday
