Why isn't France as good as New Zealand?

Playing numbers surely?

Plus NZ is a rugby nation, France is not (bar a segment of the southwest). NZ kids grow up with an oval ball, it’s part of the sporting fabric of the place, so with that upbringing they are bound to excel at both codes.

They’d be number one at RL too if they had the same (or close to) playing numbers as Aus.

The quantity over quality argument rarely stands up to scrutiny. India should have been dominating Cricket cricket for decades, rarely losing a testing match or world cup. In football it would be dominated by India, China, USA; overiously it is not.  In terms  of playing numbers  only 2 countries in the top ten have even made it to a world cup semi-final, by contrast Croatia have competed in 5 World Cups making to the semi-final once and the last time they made it to the final,  if playing numbers coming into they would not even qualify for the world cup.

France has poor coaching and playing structures New Zealand has the opposite. That is the biggest contributing factor.

It does make you wonder how a SL French Pro like Yaha would be if he had been playing in NZ from the age of 10 and vice versa with a average NRL player from Auckland.

Agree coaching is a massive factor.

Different sport but would you say Croatia have better coaching and playing structures than England though? I’d say not, and possibly that is why they’re better at football then us. Local culture has a lot to do with it.

They certainly have better coaching. Technically they have been been better players than those representing England since they became an International team. In terms of structures, I would guess that the opportunities in Croatia at level 1 & 2 are better than in the EPL and Championship. This is something the English FA have only recently tried to address.

I doubt their coaching is better, they’ll just let lads play instead of having it too structured.

But are Croatia really better than England! Are we basing that off a one off world cup semi final. England are ranked above them in the world rankings.

Your point about China and India is interesting. Natural ethnic genetics plays a huge part.

If you pick a rugby league team from a random group of 1,000 Tongans in comparison to 1,000 Chinese (all aged 20 - 30 who have never played rugby), on average, the random Tongan team would destroy the Chinese team. Tongans are naturally bigger, stronger and more explosive with fast twitch muscle fibers. More suited to rugby league.

Same with Indians. On average the asian counties body composition isn't as naturally athletic in comparison to Caucasians, African, Polynesian etc. Since 1900, Michael Phelps has won more olympic gold medals than than all of India combined.

To summarise, when playing rugby it helps having a large pacific island population.

Both only have 1 fully pro team. Both governing bodies are broke. Both have huge union competition for talent. If you take these into account they should be of similar class. But that's not the case. New Zealand is arguably better than even us.

One gets the impression looking at French clubs in small towns like Lescure, Baho, Ille-Sur-Tet, etc that they`re quite content, for good or ill, doing their own thing in their own way.
