Some good news - The George Hotel

There is a mythically good but mystery curry house behind the railway station somewhere. With a station cat, pint at the George, curry and a direct train from Cas ....Well, it would be rude not to.

Brilliant news. I loved my visit to the museum when it was in full swing. I even offered a historic shirt but it closed before I could make it happen.

My only worry is that the council still have the money when far more important things will be needing it for the rest of the year and probably beyond

They could temporarily re-purpose it as a COVID-19 testing centre.

There are a few: LaLa's in George Square and the Nawab on Upperhead Row are both good.

I can't imagine what Kirklees plan to do with the building but seriously fear it might be another black hole into which to pour money. As I have stated before there is no demand whatsoever for another hotel in Huddersfield. Linking it to the RL heritage aspects of the town is also over-egging the pudding: a meeting was held there as it was geographically convenient; despite the massive success of the Huddersfield club in days of yore it has never been a hotbed of RL.

Sport, amongst other things, is a dream-world offering escape from harsh reality and the disturbing prospect of change.

I think it’s not coincidence that it’s gone back to tender so soon after Kirklees Council announced it’s buying the hotel.

I think that it is a complete coincidence.

Reports in the local press are that any plans aren't even on the back burner now due to much more pressing issues. the local improvement plan, which includes much more important elements than the George, looks like it might be put back by two years at least.

That’s a pity, Johnny.

As I suspected. The original report only said the council had agree a price, not bought it. A big difference.

Councils everywhere will not have the money to do anything like this for many years to come now.

All very sad

Pleased to hear but it just feels wrong that the previous owner made such a profit on the building when he let it fall into disrepair

Opportunism. He bought it for a very cheap price when nobody else, including the council, was interested. Anyone can do it if they are prepared to take the risk and trust their own judgement.

The council payed a hell of a price imo.  Still all the renovation works to do.

Bought for 900 grand in Apr 2013 and put back on the market for 3m in Dec 2015.

You could argue 1.8m in 2020 is a bargain.

A grant of 1.4m already secured but how far that will go re the renovations is anyone's guess.

More grants applied for.

A case of watch this space.

I wouldn’t argue at all because it isn’t.

The building is is worse condition than in 2013 and double the price, before survey, estimates, planning and tender costs.  Add to that consultants fees (utilities, structurals, architectural, maybe heritage etc) before the final build costs are even submitted.

OK fair enough.

Maybe I should have started a new thread and called it 'More bad news' - The George Hotel'.

If I were Rugby League Cares I would be looking to have a chat with Chris Mather of Mather and Co. in Wilmslow Cheshire. Google that company to see what I mean.

His Company is close to being world leaders in the highly specialised arena of  Museum design , Attraction presentation  etc, He has in the past designed and organised the National Football  Centre , Twickenham Heritage Centre, a host of soccer arena tours  as well as ' ordinary ' museum and gallery upgrades. He planned and developed the Coronation Street Tour and the one on Leeds Wharf.

If anything is to be made of the George then we need consultants who know their business at least spoken to in the early stages.

And why should I mention him ?

Chris was an ESRL  Under 16 International  and Wigan St Pat' s Youth player who scored  a winning try in Blackpool at the BARLA U 19  National  Cup final   ( brought back from Leicester Uni for the game )............

I occasionally ask myself what is the greatest strength of the RFU ? Maybe it's the contacts they keep after they retire from the field......
