Recommended Posts

On my local rugby unions club page, there is a discussion re the best 7's team ever.It seems to have been started by @philllewellyn and is about the Middlesex sevens.

Anyway,his suggestion is :

Jason Robinson,

Va'aiga Tuigamala,

Martin Offiah,

Henry Paul,

Shaun Edwards,

Andrew Farrell,

Scott Quinnell.

May keep some of you occupied for the day.

I will never tire of seeing Dalaglio's face as the pies were swatting his precious Wasps. He had the air of a beaten man who knew that resistance was, indeed, futile.

Then there's the story of the Bradford team.......?

It was a small moment of pleasure but at what cost.

Every single one of the 7 Wigan players listed went on to either play or coach Union and were lost from our game.

Good point. do you think it was that performance that led to those signatures or just the trend of League players going to Union.

It was satisfying though, as was the Bradford one.

Another good Wigan Sevens performance.

Funny enough I watched this again the other day and actually laughed out loud when Garry Connolly flattened Dalaglio, I think the ref gave high tackle because he felt sorry for him

A little bit of both I guess. Wigan were obviously the dominant team at the time so obvious target for Union but towards the end of the commentary on the final the summarisor (Jeremy Guscott I think) mentioned how the Union scouts would be watching the games with an eye on the Wigan players.

Maybe a few would have gone over anyway but I am sure that the 7's and the cross code games put them in the shop window.

In hindsight I would have preferred to have not played them and kept these people in our our game.

It was a time of RU clubs throwing around very big money to bring some professional experience into their sides, with very mixed success. The majority of that Wigan 7's team were from a RU background, that's a key reason they went to RU.

Inga and Quinnell were ex-RU Internationals so would have gone regardless. Offiah wasn't exactly lost to the game, he was well past his prime when he returned to RU. Edward's was a veteran who played for England RU schoolboys and was interested in the pay packet, he would have taken up coaching tiddlywinks if the money had been right.

Didn't Paul move to RU at his wife's insistence following an "incident" with a Bulls cheerleader? (Apolgies to HP if I have got that wrong).

Robinson and Farrell were very big losses to the game.

Also, they didn't all suddenly move straight after the 7's, took several years and plenty of others from RL moved across or returned to RU around that time so it's a bit selective picking on this ex-RU heavy group.

Scott Quinnell was probably in Wigan's Sevens side for his RU experience, rather than as a Sevens specialist, Otherwise, I think Wigan would have picked someone else; someone who was a bit more mobile.

Then he went back to Richmond and helped ruin them in their post-shamateurism financial implosion.

For cross-code Sevens, Bradford took part in tougher circumstances, against sides who had been honestly professional for several years. And they beat the lot of them with far greater ease. Plus they made Guscott sound like he wanted to throw up. :kolobok_biggrin:

Beat them after playing a Friday night Superleague game then travelling down, where the bus broke down if I remember correctly

Watched the Bradford games again on Youtube just the other day. Guscott misidentifies Vaikona as The Volcano, but apart from that the commentary is pretty complimentary - hard not to be really, they really did swat everyone aside.

Agree, Guscott is actually very complimentary of Bradford and never tries to diminish their quality at all. Quite the opposite in fact.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people believe a narrative then let it eat away at them. Guscott was a very good RU player. He would likely have been a very good RL player too.

He mainly talks about size, strength and pace when it comes to Bradford. Admitting they have skill comes grudgingly from him late on in the tournament.

Perhaps watch the YouTube clips again. The only thing grudging is you.

Then I assume you've heard the same Guscott commentary on the YouTube clips.

There's even a hint of gushing in places.

I thought the commentary in both the Wigan and Bradford games was very fair and dished out a lot of praise for both sides.

Yes, there was the occasional comment when a lineout when ridiculously wrong or a player was caught offside but overall very complimentary.

Reverse the situation and how many of us would b so complementary of a Union team winning a League 9's tournament?

A massive part of it was Phil Clarke's brother. He was agent to a good number of them, and was on record as saying he was actively seeking union clubs for his Rugby League players.

Each transfer netted him a fat payment.
