Anyway,his suggestion is : Jason Robinson, Va'aiga Tuigamala, Martin Offiah, Henry Paul, Shaun Edwards, Andrew Farrell, Scott Quinnell. May keep some of you occupied for the day. Wigan were obviously the dominant team at the time so obvious target for Union but towards the end of the commentary on the final the summarisor (Jeremy Guscott I think) mentioned how the Union scouts would be watching the games with an eye on the Wigan players. Maybe a few would have gone over anyway but I am sure that the 7's and the cross code games put them in the shop window. In hindsight I would have preferred to have not played them and kept these people in our our game. Whippet13 Posted March 23, 2020 Share Posted March 23, 2020 It was a time of RU clubs throwing around very big money to bring some professional experience into their sides, with very mixed success. The majority of that Wigan 7's team were from a RU background, that's a key reason they went to RU. Inga and Quinnell were ex-RU Internationals so would have gone regardless. Offiah wasn't exactly lost to the game, he was well past his prime when he returned to RU. Edward's was a veteran who played for England RU schoolboys and was interested in the pay packet, he would have taken up coaching tiddlywinks if the money had been right. Didn't Paul move to RU at his wife's insistence following an "incident" with a Bulls cheerleader? (Apolgies to HP if I have got that wrong). Robinson and Farrell were very big losses to the game. Also, they didn't all suddenly move straight after the 7's, took several years and plenty of others from RL moved across or returned to RU around that time so it's a bit selective picking on this ex-RU heavy group. Then he went back to Richmond and helped ruin them in their post-shamateurism financial implosion. For cross-code Sevens, Bradford took part in tougher circumstances, against sides who had been honestly professional for several years. And they beat the lot of them with far greater ease. Guscott misidentifies Vaikona as The Volcano, but apart from that the commentary is pretty complimentary - hard not to be really, they really did swat everyone aside. Agree, Guscott is actually very complimentary of Bradford and never tries to diminish their quality at all. Quite the opposite in fact. It never ceases to amaze me how some people believe a narrative then let it eat away at them. Guscott was a very good RU player. He would likely have been a very good RL player too. Yes, there was the occasional comment when a lineout when ridiculously wrong or a player was caught offside but overall very complimentary. Reverse the situation and how many of us would b so complementary of a Union team winning a League 9's tournament?
