Companies that went the extra mile during the Coronavirus crisis

Recommended Posts

I know on the Coronavirus threads there have been many examples of companies that have treated their staff really well and have looked to help people and the country during the Coronavirus pandemic. These acts deserve to be highlighted so here is a thread because these companies deserve to have our custom when this pandemic finishes and they should be championed.

Our cancelled holiday:
- every single Italian company refunded non-refundable stuff
- BA "computer says no" on deposit

NHS conference in Manchester cancelled: Marriott refunded non-refundable pre-paid rooms.

All those will be remembered.

Kurt Geiger:

After all 55 of its high street stores in the UK and Ireland closed yesterday, Kurt Geiger is encouraging its staff to now spend their time giving back.

The accessories brand announced to its 2500-strong workforce, many of whom are store workers who will be unable to work remotely following closures, a plan to help employees support their local communities whilst they are off work and receiving full pay.

Kurt Geiger has aligned with Age UK who have launched a neighbourly volunteering scheme and has asked all of its employees to spend some of the time they are not working to volunteer with Age UK in their local communities.

In addition to these measures, the brand is pledging to help NHS workers, by offering all workers a 50 per cent discount for a full year in all Kurt Geiger stores.

Any Kurt Geiger store manager who volunteers in their local NHS hospital will also be given 55 vouchers each to the tune of £100 to give to 55 NHS workers in the critical care departments.

We've got some hi-tech small manufacturing  companies on the park where our office is (we are all at home) that have started making ventilators and ventilator parts. I'll find out who they are when it's all over.

Appreciate there franchises, but heard good things about Costa, Nandos and Cafe Nero going the extra mile locally to make sure there fresh stock didn't go to waste.

Locally we have an Italian restaurant in the village I live that has spent all day making sure its fresh stock got to local OAPs and anyone in isolation, that'll be fondly remembered, plenty bought from there takeaway offering as a result and bought gift vouchers to show support.

I can happily support this company and pledge to do all I can to increase their profits through an increased consumption of Guinness - Diageo:

Distiller Diageo has pledged to donate enough alcohol to make more than eight million bottles of hand sanitiser to help protect frontline healthcare workers globally.

The company - which has production bases around the world, including in Northern Ireland and the Republic – will make the necessary alcohol available at no cost to hand sanitiser companies.

Diageo says it will provide enough Grain Neutral Spirit (GNS) – a 96% strength ethyl alcohol used primarily in production of vodka and gin – to make more than eight million 250ml bottles.

Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs' hotel business. Not just for making their services available to NHS workers and keeping staff paid, but also allowing the homeless to sleep in one of their hotels over the Winter a year or so ago, while the building was awaiting refurbishment.

I stood my lads down yesterday and have given notice that due to the coronavirus I will not be starting three new contracts next week, I will be making my lads up to their full basic wage for up to six months,  I'll then revise this and depending on money owned to me getting paid I will carry on as long as I can.

"Other bicycle firms such as Brompton Bicycle, a folding bike specialist, have lent bicycles to staff at hospitals in London to help them get to and from work."

Halford's getting a lot of stick for staying open, but they are a major bicycle retailer (allowed on the list) and people still need to use their cars so certain things in there are effectively essential.

Maybe not quite the extra mile, but deserves a mention :

My sister works for Lloyds bank. They have reduced opening hours and stopped mobile banks all together. Lots of spare staff now. The branches have split into 2 teams, each going to work a week, then rotate, all still on full pay

Tesco are paying colleagues 10% extra per hour for like the next month or so

I had to go Tesco to buy food yesterday and was very impressed to see  them operating a one-in, one-out policy and enforcing a 2 metre separation between people queuing to get in, and at the checkouts and cleaning down trolleys and baskets as people left. AFAICT, Sainsbury's had not really done anything special.

My (large tech company) ex-employer has continued to pay various small local suppliers (e.g. for sandwiches, fruit etc.) but directed them (anonymously) to deliver to staff at Addenbrookes hospital instead.

Yep, I've been on the door every night between 8 and 10. Had a few grumpy sods but most people get on board and understand why we're doing it.

Just wish people would remember that you should still stay 2m away while in the shop. Still have some people trying to lean through me to get to stuff, not on at all.

Fat Olive Restaurant in Wigan emptied all their stock and took it down to the food banks as soon as the restaurant ban came in.
