Over 26,000 fans have voted on the NRL website. At this point in time 56% of the respondents have selected my choice, Billy Slater. No other player is even close.

Case closed.

Well, if there is one thing that the last few years of history has taught us, it's that you can always trust the public to make the right decision.

As great as Lockyer was at fullback the one thing people forget is that he lost his pace by his late 20's/30's. By then he wasn't even particularly fast for a five eighth let along a fullback.

He probably wouldn't of been able to play fullback in his 30's like Slater did.

Can you expand on this point please. In what way did he lose his place? He played for Queensland and Australia for 13 years and is the most capped Kangaroo of all time.

Pace not place.

The thread is the best in last 30 years. Churchill & Langlands didn't play in the last 30 years. I didn't see Churchill play but I first saw Langlands when he was on the 1963 Kangaroo Tour. They touted him as the first full time Rugby League player.

Lockyer was great but Slater's the best full back I've seen.

Why didn’t slater get in the Queensland team of the century ahead of Lockyer who was picked at full back?

To be fair to Slater, that team was announced in 2008 while Slater played for Queensland from 2004 to 2018 and only made his Kangaroo debut in 2008.

If the team were considered today Slater would probably be the fullback... and I say that because he played his entire career at 1 while Lockyer always suffers in these conversations because he was so good at both 1 and 6.

Why is it that so many people n this forum are unaware of the fact that Darren Lockyer, as good as he was in attack, was a poor defender? I have seen Lockyer miss many tackles that a good full back, let alone a great full back, should have made.

Billy Slater, by contrast, apart from his numerous talents as an attacking full back, was one of the great defensive full backs of all time.

You have made this claim before when we discuss Lockyer but I have to admit I don't have this memory.  There are plenty of Lockyer's games on YouTube, can you find some examples of the tackles he should have made?

I did try and find a missed tackle by searching of 'Darren Lockyer missed tackle' on Google but unfortunately all it returned was this try saving tackle he made...

Lockyer's ball playing skills and kicking game were miles ahead of Slater's or any other fullback for that matter. Combined with his speed, match sense and tendency to perform on the biggest stage, and he's the best all round fullback I've seen. His defence wasn't as good as Slater's, but it was fine.

Slater or Gary Jack but Paul Charlton was better!

Gary Jack was very good.  I vividly remember him turning up for a coaching course with Dennis Cartwright, with his boots and a sandwich in a plastic bag.

The problem in choosing the defining FB  is  that some moved on to different positions.  They were that good, they could do.  Lockyer, (FB,,SO), Inglis (W,FB,Centre and SO i think).  If it was one player I loved to watch whatever the position it was Inglis but Slater was an out and out FB so I suppose, with his time in position, it has to be him.

If it was down to one FB who posed more of a problem for defences, imo, it was Lockyer.

Glad to here that LD.

I was reminded of him and several other world class British players when watching the WC final with Clive Sullivan.

Lockyer was the all round complete player, that’s why I’d have him in ahead of Slater.

If Lockyer never made the move to 6, it would of been a hell of a battle for the Queensland and Australia 1 shirt between the two of them.

Slater Nr1 by a long way as Lockyer didnt play his whole career as a FB.

All those NRL lovers slating the standard of SL FB - If Paul Wellens had played NRL he would have been in the top 5 on this list in my opinion- everyone seems to forget just how good he was.

I think his lack of pace would have been exposed in the NRL.

Brain was faster, yes he played In a very good Saints team but great players make great teams and you have got to be good enough to get into those teams as well ( he had a lot of GB caps as well)

I was in Sydney in 2006 when GB beat the Aussies and he ( and Long) run rings round them all night - despite his lack of pace. He scored against them as well that night  - despite his lack of pace.

We really do sell our top players short sometimes.

Jonathan Davies comes into consideration in this discussion as he played the 1991 season with Canterbury.

He was a fine player who would have done a job in the NRL,but top 5,not for me,Radlinski  is another who would have made it downunder.

I have this debate a lot with Australian friends. My take is that Lockyer was a better footballer and all round player but you'd probably say Slater was the best full back due to him playing all his career there. He also developed a passing game towards the end of his career which was one of his weak points early on.

Inglis obviously a beast but I think of him as a centre who played a bit of full back. A bit of one of the old how do I get my best player on the ball the most. I think Inglis was a better player than Billy but again I'd say Slater was the better full back given the specialisation.

One thing is for sure, Australia churn out a lot of good full backs.
