CSKA Moscow vs Partizan Belgrade

Recommended Posts

Awesome footage, great crowd, icy conditions, what more could you want?  The only sad thing about this, is this would ultimately be CSKA's last game of Rugby League, shortly after this, they ditched rugby league to focus solely on union.

That was bloody great. How on earth can we stand by and let them go to the dark side?

Did you play in it JC38? I loved it. Get them some more international competition, keep them in it.

Yes mate was lucky enough to play in it. Video doesn't do the crowd justice they were unreal...they had the flares out in the second half. A great advert for league in Russia and the region in general.

Unfortunately the powers that run the club decided to go down the professional rugby union route and refused for any of the players to be involved in Rugby League. It is a massive shame as they are a very well run club and many of the players played for the national team.

Has anyone seen the Wikipedia entry for "Rugby Club Partizan"? Even allowing for the usual dangers to RL of the word "Rugby", this page is unconscionably misleading/deceptive.

I just had a look.  They also  run a rugby union team and the page you are reading is indeed about their RU team, not their League team.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_Club_Partizan

If you look at the column on the far-right of the page, it lists all the sports they are active in, 22 sports in total.  It mentions Rugby League, but it is the only one that is not a click-able link.  I heard about a year ago that Partizan RL were having some legal issues with the broader Partizan club, and that they no longer officially endorse the RL team as being part of Partizan.  I hope that is not true, but would definitely explain why they have been excluded.

PS:  I also checked the Serbian-language version of this on wiki, I don't speak Serbian, but I see that they have two separate icons, each labelled 'rugby', but when clicked, both lead to the rugby union team's page.

It`s the paragraph describing the creation of Partizan in 1953, references to the "French Rugby Federation", exhibition games, and other events in the fifties. Unless everything else I`ve read is wrong, this was League, yet there`s no mention of it. Anyone reading it would assume it was Union seamlessly from 1953 on.

I know there was some activity in 1953, but most of the article is clearly talking about union (first paragraph confirms it).  The part in bold (and possibly the paragraph following it) is the only part where they may have gotten their wires crossed, but I don't know for sure, as I don't know anything about RU in Serbia...

Rugby Club Partizan, (Serbian: Рагби клуб Партизан) is a rugby club from Belgrade, Serbia.[1] The club is part of the sports society JSD Partizan, and is a member of the Rugby Union of Serbia.[2]

In its history Partizan has won 19 national Championships and 17 national Cups.

The first rugby clubs in Serbia were formed by some students returning from Britain after the First World War. They founded the "Jugoslavija" club in Belgrade and the "Beli orao" club in Sabac, but by 1923 rugby activities had ceased due to a lack of pitches.

Rugby was re-introduced in 1953 when Dragan Marsicevic, the secretary of the Yugoslavian Sport Association, accepted an offer from the French Rugby Federation to send two teams to Serbia to play a series of four matches to stimulate interest. The first match between the French Universities team and a French Provincial Selection was played in Belgrade on 26 November 1953.

Partizan was the first new rugby club in Yugoslavia, founded on November 1, 1953. A few months later rugby club Radnicki was founded too. The first match between Partizan and Radnicki was played in Paracin on 26 April 1954, with Partizan winning 21–11. The return match played in Belgrade on 1 May 1954 was also won by Partizan, 16–14.

The Rugby Championship of Yugoslavia ran from 1957-1991. Partizan won the second, third, and fourth title. Before the breakup of SFR Yugoslavia, Partizan won titles in 1988 and in 1991, the last championship.

According to everything I`ve read, on Serbian RL Wiki pages and in our specialist media, all the activity outlined in the paragraph in bold and the one following is League. So Partizan and Radnicki were formed as League clubs, the French governing body referred to was Federation Francaise de Rugby a Treize, the French exhibition games were League, and the domestic games were League.

Apparently, clubs in Croatia and Bosnia were playing Union and the Yugoslavian authorities forced the Serbs to align with them, the ban on League (if official ban it was) enforced some time in the sixties.

Just to be clear, I know this Rugby Club Partizan page is the RU club`s. What I`m claiming is that including, uncredited, parts of Serbian RL history is at best misleading, and possibly downright deceptive.

So they are the Russian version of Club Athlétique Brive Corrèze Limousin and Racing Club de Narbonne Méditerannée. Sad to see like vichy all over again

* Serbian version.

I suppose you could say that.  But I don't believe it was just Partizan, I believe they shut down all RL activity, not sure how many players/teams they had at the time.  I am sure someone at Serbian RL would have that sort of info though.
