Saints swoop for Joel Thompson

Fringe NRL player who’s been a starter when fit for about 10 seasons

Saints have lost an international prop. So it seems reasonably to replace with an established quality prop ...if they can.  Its fair enough for teams to put together the best mix of players they can.

J.Thompson is not a prop.  I'm suggesting that Saints have brought in an edge player aged 31. This is not related.  Good luck to both Thompson's. Harder for developing players.

Don't cut corners LD, if the club saw him as integral part of their plans they wouldn't let him go would they?

As Hela stated earlier he has requested an early release date from his contract, which has been granted, nearly every game we see broadcast from the NRL we are informed that any particular player has signed for another club from next season but he as not been granted an early realease presumably the club still sees him as valuable, no drama.

Not unless Saints paid.  Most NRL clubs overspend so recapturing some money wouldn’t be a bad decision if they have a replacement.

My point is that he was still contracted for 2021. Most likely that if Saints didn’t contact a few agents he would still be a Manly player as he had no reason to move.

Well why didn't you say so?

But irrespective, if he was valuble to Manly he wouldn't be allowed to leave.

I did.  He still had 2021 to go.  We dont know anymore than that other than supposition.

What if this is money driven?  Then it becomes a commercial decision rather than being not 'valuable'.  Saints could even be offering more than he is on now ?

Pretty chuffed with this signing, the last few years he's been in the best form of his career for Manly, really surprised he's left the NRL. Really good replacement for Taia who's retiring at the end of the season.

Just a replacement prop to sign now

Only clocked yesterday that Taia was retiring so pretty quick and shrewd business from the club.
