The tip of the Iceberg

Rather think Wigan Athletic is the tip of the football iceberg more than RL.

I looked at one of the documents relating to the sale of Wigan A, it showed they had an £18m wage bill in the second division and £10m in the third division. Seems like madness to me.

It is indeed absurd. That’s what put me off football in the last few years.

In this case it means a lot more to follow.

Numbers wise soccer is going to take a huge hit.

There’s always prepared to lump money into football clubs though, at every level. It always astounds me how otherwise incredibly astute and successful businessmen are so careless with their money when it comes to football, they can’t throw it away fast enough.

Is it a disaster scenario though in the current circumstances? If half the league goes into administration due to an extraordinary society wide event, then it doesn't matter quite as much as league rules will be adjusted, councils will protect assets from redevelopment (like at Wigan) and teams will reform. The current owners may lose money, but many of the losses will be socialised and the sporting penalties will be waived, or will be so widespread that their relative affect will be much weaker. Sport will go on if there is demand for it, which there is.

There's safety in numbers going into administration right now, and the same will apply to rugby league.

Maybe not *every* rugby league or football club will be playing in exactly the same competition they are now after it has all shaken out, but the vast majority will be, even if they go into administration.

In my opinion i think that might alter.

Read somewhere they had 600 staff (full-time / part-time) !

This was in a BBC article about 10-15 clubs following Wigan

You reap what you sow

I was never a regular at soccer games, but when the penny dropped a few years ago that the players i was watching were earning more in a week than i was in a year i thought this isn't a game i want to support at any level.

The reality is that them players were not only earning more in a week than i was in a year, but that they was more in a year than i was in a lifetime.

Always find this a bizarre stance for disliking football.

I think there is something in that, the "extraordinary circumstances" clause will likely be used by Wigan and any other club that takes this route. The RFL have already accounted for this.

It’s not football the game that I dislike, because it’s great, but it’s the opulence in the top flight, and much of the championship that turns me off.

I don't

I take it Australian Rugby League isn’t for you then? Or marquee players in Super League? Or some Super League players, who earn far more than the UK average salary? Or your mates or family who happen to earn more than you? Films? Nah, Denzel Washington is worth millions, can’t be enjoying him because of his net worth.

What a asinine comment.

Are you aware on average what a premier league player earns annually? and this is without endorsements.

Perhaps you can give me a list of Rugby League players who even get anywhere near that.

Get mad about it or stop caring is how I see it. If some megalomaniac billionaire wants to pay some 20 year old £250,000 a week, fine. It’s not my money that’s paying for it and it won’t change whether I buy three shirts a season and pay for a season ticket or I illegally stream the games to my laptop.

There will be plenty of Australian Rugby League players who earn for more than you annually in a month. There will also be some players in Super League, some marquee others not, who earn far more than the national average salary in the UK.

You haven't answered the question i asked.

If they earn more than me in a month than i do a year they are doing very well.

Perhaps you can give a list of the highest earners in the NRL?

Agreed, people should just be honest and say they dislike football for what it is and not wrapping themselves in pious purity by banging on about wages,  that presumably they wouldn't begrudge RL players.

Am I aware of what footballers earn? Yeah. Is my level of enjoyment effected by their bank balances? No and it’s not for Rugby League, the NFL or for Darts, the other sports I enjoy.

Far higher than the average salary here, far higher than anything in Super League and like football, crazy that young men are being paid millions to play a sport for a living.

Football is probably the closest industry to a meritocracy we have.

I always find it odd that people have an issue with what are generally working class boys leveraging their skill for money.

High wages in football are a good thing.

I haven’t got an issue with people leveraging their skill for money, but I do have an issue with clubs fleecing gullible fans and paying people £350k a week to not even play. That’s why I don’t subscribe to Sky even though I can afford it, my choice.

It someones skills are worth that much they should be paid that.

If you dont want to pay what football charge that's obviously your choice but it's not an ethical.choice based on a player earning his worth

It’s just my choice, I don’t care whether you think it’s ethical or not and I don’t know why you and Oliver are trying to argue about it (even though you’re the most argumentative people on the internet).

I take it you mean me?

Anyway, of all the many reasons to dislike football (ticket prices, fan behaviour, player behaviour, the pundits and commentators etc), I find it strange that so many focus on the earnings of the elite as a way to knock the game and to dislike it when the elite in all industries earn huge (comparative) amounts.

It’s a completely different topic now and I’m not accusing anyone here but the attitude some Rugby League fans have around Football is embarrassing.
