OK, here goes. Over the next few weeks we, the TRL elite, will decide which country makes the best beer.

This can be interpreted any way you wish - by best overall, by quantity of fine ales, lagers etc., by which produces the single best beer. Your choice. Choose more than 1 if you like.

We'll start with qualifying. 26 countries, in 4 pools, best 8 in the voting by 12 o'clock midday on Sunday 12th July 2020 will make the knockout phase. There will be 5 European Qualifiers, 2 from Asia/Australasia and 1 from The Americas.

This poll is for Europe, Pool B - 2 to qualify automatically, 1 to be decided between the most popular 3rd place between Europools.

Oh, I forgot. In the event of a tie, the country that drinkls the most beer per head of population will win through.

Off you go. And remember, vote responsibly.

I care not for your children, I care not for your wives, I care not for your country, I care not for your lives." - (c) Jim Boyes - "The Avenging Angel"

I went for Belgium as it produces a high percentage of the greatest beers in the world. However, probably the best beer I have ever drunk was in the brewery tap in Pilsen where Pilsner Urquell is produced. That was 27 years ago and I still don't think I have drunk a better beer since. Unfortunately in the meantime they have been bought up by Castle Breweries of South Africa who moved away from wooden vats and cut the lagering time so I suspect it is not what it was

I'd almost guarantee that the new owners have reduced the quality and content of the ingredients that made it taste so good - malt and hops. There are a number of high volume beers (especially lagers) where malt is now not the main ingredient and has been replaced by maize or rice. Then they probably add 'something' artificial to add back some of the maltiness

I like Augustine Tripel bruin.   Very strong though.   I voted for Belgium.

I agree about Pilnser Urquell  it most definitely IS the best lager in the world.

A decision for me between Belgium and Germany, but for range of beer styles, and not many duds, it was a quick decision, Belgium all the way

The two big guns are way ahead, with Ireland in pole position to take the last qualifying place as best 3rd place.

One day to go!
