As most game are to be played at a Neutral venue, why don't they just stay in the UK, Like the NZ Warriors did in Australia?

The 'rules':

International elite sportspersons and essential support staff participating in a UK elite sports event listed in the Health Protection (Coronavirus, International Travel) (England) Regulations 2020 (as amended)

You’ll need to complete the Public Health passenger locator form before you travel to the UK.

You’ll need to self-isolate for the remainder of the 14 days since you were last in a non-exempt country. You can leave your accommodation to travel directly to and attend the listed elite sports event you are participating in with other elite sports persons and essential support staff. Travelling between multiple venue locations for the sports event or training is also permitted.

You’ll need to show written evidence from a United Kingdom or English national governing body for your sport of your status as an international elite sportsperson or essential support staff attending the specified event.

Probably because SL doesn’t have anywhere near the same resources or government support as NRL does.

They could ask? Then the RFL knows where it stands with the Government, and when they offer support to RFU, then they can complain.

SL was included in the regulations as a specified competition published at the beginning of July, so this story appears to be a bit late coming out!

I doubt our government would pay for Catalans to stay in the UK for 4 months.

Catalans could find themselves in the same boat as TWP.  Think The difference been Cats will do what it takes to honour their commitments I.e relocate to the UK until travel without quarantine comes back if necessary.

Are you sure about that?

Pretty sure, yes. There's not much else they can do if a travel ban is applied to them. It's totally viable for them to set up base camp in the UK for a couple of months.

Would they have to pay for it all themselves under your plan?

Be interesting to see what happens on 7th September if there is a ban in place when Catalans home games start.

English teams won't travel there as they will have to quarantine on their return.

SL cannot reasonably ask Catalans to stay here until the end of the season without some sort of financial compensation.

Sure it was announced over weekend that they were exempt, may have been on Sky

As I've posted above SL is a 'specified competition' so they would be exempt from having to (fully) quarantine if France is added to the 'red list'. These are the rules they would have to follow:

You’ll need to complete the Public Health passenger locator form before you travel to the UK.

You’ll need to self-isolate for the remainder of the 14 days since you were last in a non-exempt country. You can leave your accommodation to travel directly to and attend the listed elite sports event you are participating in with other elite sports persons and essential support staff. Travelling between multiple venue locations for the sports event or training is also permitted.

You’ll need to show written evidence from a United Kingdom or English national governing body for your sport of your status as an international elite sportsperson or essential support staff attending the specified event.

That’s a bold statement unless you are the Catalans finance manager.

Not really. 15 Hotel rooms x 90 nights x £70 = 95k

Hire fleet (2 mini buses, 2 cars) x 90 days x £150 = £14k

Daily substance allowance, party of 30 x 90 days x £45 = £120k

Borrow a training field off an amateur club, league 1 club or Championship Club £200 A day x 90 days = £18k

£250,000 budget is more than sufficient. If they can't do that in order to meet their commitments & obligations as a Super League Club and see out the remainder of the season then we really are toiling both as individual clubs and as an overall sporting organisation.

Catalans being asked to stay in the UK and pay for it is well outside of their commitments and obligations, as is the case with NZ Warriors in the NRL.

However, the NRL paid the cost for NZW to give up their home comforts and stay in Australia so I'm sure the SL could do the same, based on your figures it's only around £25k for each of the other clubs to chip in.

What are they currently spending on charter flights?

A fair old whack, that could be diverted to the cost of a camp? As someone has informed us though, a camp hopefully shouldn't be required.

These are unprecedented times and under the current circumstances it is fully acceptable for overseas teams to have trouble when it comes to taking part in a domestic league. All clubs need support and as long as continuing this year won't cripple them then go for it. I'd rather clubs held off for the year if it means they survive into the future.

We're still allowed 5000 people in the stadium if any teams manage to come over, the French don't seem too worried where I am.

...and how about using some of the £16M the rfl was given to help the sport?

1. the money hasn't been 'given', it's available to the clubs through loans

2. Catalans can't access those loans as the money is for the benefit of English clubs only (Welsh clubs can't access it either)

Seems Catalans have clearance to continue travelling into the UK for respective fixtures despite quarantine criteria. Good news.

The forthcoming hurdle will be the French Authorities counter reaction to the British Government when they apply their own quarantine disciplines for people entering France. Let's hope Catalans don't get snarled up in this.
