Mike Danson/Wigan

Mike Danson, the owner of the New Statesman and 128th richest person in the country, has taken a substanial stake in Wigan RL.

Wonder if this is related to ambitions to buy the soccer club or if it's purely RL-related. Or both.

The irony of one of Britain's richest men owning the New Statesman.

By buying into a Rugby League club maybe he thinks it'll establish his working class Socialist credentials!

I was thinking just that.  I guess Wigan players will be bending the knee left (obviously) right and centre from now on.

He is worth well over 600million. (!!!)  Sold a IT company and so that be where the Warriors chairman comes in.     It may be that he is involved in this Wigan Athletic business.  If so he will make more money out of that than the New Statesman!

But looking into this he has business links in America.   'These are deep waters, Watson.'

This is probably a bit off topic now but he lives in what used to be Michael Jackson's house in NY.

It's not often you get a chance to mention Marc Chagall and Rugby League (and by association Scholes Crossing) in the same sentance.  So I'll take it!

I think you may have just stumbled across the mystery backer for New York RLFC.

If he's buyinging into Wigan that explains their recent Toronto U-Turn perfectly.....

Not really ironic at all though is it. One of the richest, or 128th. But you don’t have to be poor to have socialist beliefs and principles.

He is a capitalist... that obvious. That's the opposite of socialism.

But needs must, if a bleenin' heart liberal can help save rugby league, I'll take it.

Ha ha... I sat here waiting for the first one.... My money was on Wakey or Leigh

Leigh isn't a city. I understand the local Baron (Deryk De Beaumont) applied for City status for Leigh in 1342 when Hamburg were on the verge of being thrown out of the Hanseatic League due to unpaid bills and plans to drop their city status as a tax write off, but were rejected due a mysterious last minute bail out for Hamburg and Leigh not having a coach station.

Leigh is a metropolis, City is small fry.
