Of course affordability comes into it. You’ve said so yourself.

Super League clubs struck a deal regarding testing and finances would have been a factor. It’s all well and could now, in hindsight, claiming we should have had more and more frequent testing but the clubs come up with a procedure that met the government guidelines, kept costs down and was agreed upon by all.

Doubling the costs now presents a significant risk to clubs at a time when income is already incredibly low. I’d be surprised if all clubs could just double their outgoings on this without any problems.

I understand your point, but for me the over riding factor would be if SL not able to complete games and hence lose Sky monies. Protocols should have been as stringent as possible otherwise your taking that risk... e.g. soccer twice a week test, controlled bubble.

One would have hoped the protocol included not too socialise as per the current covid-normal, i.e. only essential shopping for he family or if not possible in semi self isolation with other players...

Yep understand costs implication but losing the rest of season and hence losing Sky monies is the bigger disaster to mitigate against. This for both clubs, players and  staff livelihoods.

Salford players all negative so far. Jenna Brooks saying 11 players to isolate however

Glad to hear that. One would have thought the Salford players and staff would have been at much greater risk.Greater Manchester area was supposed to be a high risk so one would think Salford and Wigan players would be more likely to test positive. They must have been more aware of their surroundings. Why Hull FC.,Have Rovers any players tested positive after all they do share the same City.

Does this story surprise you?

I follow a fair few players on Instagram and it's pretty clear that players / wives from a whole host of teams are gathering for parties, etc.

This is it. If all teams are following the same protocols it means that they only get temp tested. So if a player's temp is high they are taken out of the 'bubble'.

So where do they go? They return home to families who have been seeing other people, shopping, working in offices etc.

My ex wife had Covid 19 and 4 residents of the nursing home she lives in died so please don't insult my intelligence.

In that case you’ll know that spread of covid isn’t uniform so one team’s wives passing it on (if that’s what’s happened) doesn’t mean another’s will necessarily do the same. Blaming Hull’s players for this with no knowledge of why the outbreak has happened isn’t very sensible.

The Wigan area is one of the lowest reported cases about, in fact the Leigh and Ashton MP's were canvassing parliament to have have the restrictions lifted from the rest of Gt Manchester, it is the area's with big south Asian populations like Oldham and Bolton that are recording the increases as in other parts of the country. Wigan Metropolitan Area does not have a large Asian community.

Before anybody jumps on my back saying that is a racist slur it isn't meant to be, it is a fact that South Asians ard more susceptible to Covid 19.

Many areas of Greater Manchester are low risk and the players live all over the place including Yorkshire. The 20-30 age group seem to be the infectors/carriers but the pubs are still open.

I think very few of the Salford British players live in Salford.

I'm not going to suggest you did mean it as any kind of racial slur, Harry - I don't think you did. I do however think you've done a good old fashioned 2+2= 5.

It's true to say the BAME communities are seemingly more at risk (for a variety of reasons) of contracting COVID but based on what i've seen and read, despite Wigan not having the same demographics as the other areas you've mentioned, it's pretty much in-line with them overall (not just this latest spike) in terms of total cases and deaths. So in that sense you could argue it's actually doing worse?

This should remind us how virulent is this virus. It's not over yet.

Absolutely, the players and staff could have been following the protocols to the letter but that only mitigates the risk. Viruses don't stick to guidelines.

According to James Smailes, the Hull reporter. He’s very good at what he does.

Agree about Smailes. Here's his latest piece on the subject:

Adam Pearson reportedly saying that they believe the 'infections' originated from one of the players' new born baby, passed on to the player, then to the physio and then onwards to others at the club.

If that is the case no blame can be attached to the players staff or the Club Hull FC.Infection rates up to 5th August Kingston Upon Hull 2 in 100.000.Salford 31 in 100.000 and Wigan 9 in 100.000.So it is  likely Pearsons explenation may be correct. However what are the odds of a new born baby having the virus.I may need to do some research.

It's not unknown. Here's one example from way back in March https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/14/newborn-baby-tests-positive-for-coronavirus-in-london

I think this shows how difficult it is going to be for us to finish the season with the current processes in place. It is clear to see why the NRL have such strict measures in place, but not sure whether those bubbles could be enforced in the UK game or whether the asks are too much.

What is clear that the virus only needs a small spark and it can spread quite quickly.

I can't help but feel we have been a little naive in our approach. Even on the sideline at matches, I think every single person should have had masks on, no questions, even if just a perception thing.

I'm surprised coaching staff have been affected, they should be keeping a distance and physios etc. should be wearing PPE.

A full detailed review needs to take place here to see how this has spread.

I find the newborn baby story interesting, and hope the baby is ok if that is the case. A cynic could suggest they have picked the one person as the source who couldn't possibly be blamed in any way.

Why have no other teams players wives or partners passed it on?.I know spitting is not going to pass on the virus but we are a televised sport and players must set an example.

Well why does anyone get it? It only takes one unlucky person to contract it and it can easily spread around the squad when they are all training together. My point it that no one knows at this stage how or why we ended up in this situation. So it's no fair to be accusing anyone of acting irresponsibly.

Re the protocols - socialising is apparently allowed including I would guess visiting pubs etc since players have apparently been posting things on SM showing themselves doing exactly that.

The game here simply can't afford to test, travel and bubble how they need to. It just doesn't have the cash in the game. This means they have to do what they can and cross their fingers. It may or may not be enough but this is August, the end of the season is such a long way down the road. That's not even mentioning what might happen with France etc.

When the 21 man squad was announced last week they did say Swift wasn't included following the recent birth of his child. Which did strike me as odd because why wouldn't you play a week after your child is born? I wonder if he was already isolating at that point but it was too late and he had already passed it on. Everyone passed their tests on Friday, but it was maybe just too early for anything to show up on a test.

Yup, that's what I mean about our approach being naive. Sky News are showing a feature on loop about how pubs in Greater Manchester for example aren't following processes, and this will be replicated across the country, although everywhere I have been had taken things seriously.

We may need to rethink our approach, our sport is very close contact and won't be as luck as things like football where close contact is limited.
